Brewer under licence in Tennents Brewery,Duke St ,Glasgow of all places. It's strange that it doesn't come out the same as the Leuven original (the ingredients are followed to Stellas exact recipe),but I worked there for a while and there was some talk that the difference in water and PH in particular was the primary reason.Scottish water is pretty good straight from the tap and is very 'soft' whereas you wouldn't thank the Belgians for a glass of theirs!!
I think the difference is that we artificially boost the production time by putting in additives not allowed in Belgium ending up with a gassy product totally unlike their’s. Nice place to spend a bit of time in. Lots of outdoor eating and drinking for a city of only about 100,000. please log in to view this image
My wife and I had spent a lot of time in Belgium after we became friends in 2002 with a Flemish couple from Bornem,Antwerpen. Sadly(for me) the lass is a vice consel and has been working in the Belgian Embassy in Beijing for the last 2 years.Lovely people the Flemish, the hospitality is second to none and they love their ale.I enjoy a Duvel or twelve when visiting and their dark beers(Brune) are heavenly.
Funny how they drink plenty and are out a lot later than us but you never see anyone staggering around drunk like you do here. Maybe allowing 14 year olds to have a beer with their parents in a bar and letting them go in bars on their own at 16 and having beer and wine, spirits not until they are 18, teaches them that drinking is part of a night out and not the be all and end all of a night. Works better than our forbidden fruit approach until you are 18. Lots of small bars owned by individuals rather than the chains and drinking barns we have helps.
Very true.I always remember sitting outside a bar in Mechelen drinking a beer and a dozen youngsters(probably 18-20 ish years old) sat down at a table next to us. The order...8 coffees,2 colas and 2 small Stellas!!!
