Off Topic Circumcision

It's Jewish and Muslim related, it's never been a Catholic issue at all in fact some regard it as immoral, and if it is in your area, then there's something weird going on there. I know you'll hate this but the Pope has said it's not even a feature of Christian identity.
Why would I hate that? <laugh>
I am racking my brain trying to think if I know anyone whom I know to be circumcised.
I am assuming every Muslim I have ever known is.
Only person I can think of whom I know 100% is an Irish Catholic friend of mine I went to school with.
Maybe his parents did it for hygiene reasons then.
If anything thats dumber. If you believe your child will go to hell if he has a foreskin, whilst I find that bizarre, if thats your core belief, I can atleast understand why you would choose to do it.
But because it gets dirty? Just crazy.

Years ago it was done to baby boys as a matter of course, parents probably didn't even know why they did it. The father was circumcised so he did the same for his sons. It wasn't a long, thought out process. Like I said earlier, in some countries baby girls have their ears pierced before their 2nd birthday [or something like that an Italian friend told me ages ago can't remember the details]. Why before that birthday and not after, I don't know, it's part of the culture and like a lot of things we don't understand, we judge them by our standards. We had a thread a while ago about arranged marriage and again we don't understand it so judge it by our cultural acceptance.

This is very true, it's mainly done because parents want it for various reasons, none of which justify it when you examine it morally and ethically.
The parents are absolutely not doing it out of any intent to harm, just like FGM there are a set of beliefs (which may vary) that have been about a long time and people actually believe it is the right thing to do for whatever reasons. In all cases morally and ethically it is mutilation unless a medical requirement decided upon by a doctor

It should be law in any civilised country that you cannot choose to lob bits off your baby because you "believe" they should be chopped off
Then having kids ears pierced should also be illegal<ok>

Is it a religious, medical or vanity?

Wither way putting holes in body parts should be banned until an agree age of consent of circumcision should be banned.

There, that's put the discussion to bed

Yes.. yes it is mutilation and it is a ****ing horrendous practice. I thank god (the one I don't believe in) for being a whole man. Circumcision should be punishable by law, a parent should NOT have the right to make such a disgusting call, even on their own child.

If adults want to get circumcised that's a whole different matter. Their body, their choice. Babies do not have the choice, once it's done, it's done.

You will have to watch what you say around him as they pick up words really quickly once they start. Best not watch LFC for a few seasons...don't want him picking up to many swear words!
<laugh>

So true. They live in the north east so don't get to see them as much as we'd like either. Thank goodness for Skype <ok>
