Starter? No, want room for main Main Turkey and all the trimmings Dessert No, usually too full after main. Made a sugar-free banana and pear bread & butter pudding yesterday and it's in the freezer ready for when it's needed. At the in-laws so probably no starter Turkey and all the trimmings, father-in-law is a genius when it comes to roast tatties, the rest will be just food unfortunately but can't complain as I haven't got to prepare and cook it. Dessert will be a caramel/apple cheesecake which will be top notch because I'm making it. Got some half decent champagne to kick things off, followed by whatever wine the in-laws have. Port for later with a selection of cheese Klippitty Klopp because he'd be a right laugh, Shane Long to start the singing Scarlett Johansson, to remind my current wife of the sacrifice I made by marrying her.
Forgot to add I bought a nice bottle of Hine Vsop for when the kids are in bed, good stuff , highly recommend it if you like a nice drop of cognac.
Because everyone else wants to crack on and get the main not mess about having to wait for the starter, then waiting once thats over for the main meal.
And everyone else has decided what they want...one person choosing to have a starter is rude in my book. It makes people change their minds because a starter usually means you have to choose a lighter main course....result...ordering is delayed whilst everyone reconsiders. Can add an hour to the evening....extra time for ordering, waiting for starter, eating starter whilst most people stare at you, then delay before main course.
Just scrubbed two off my dinner invite list.... Food shouldn’t be rushed... one thing the French have got right.
Back in the day, at a restaurant, three courses were the option, for me. These days the main is enough and I genuinely don’t know how I ever managed to tuck away three courses and a few beers.
Amen to that Fats. I remember the first Twinning visit we went on to “our” village in the Mayenne. We arrived on the coach at 10:30 in the morning, and lunch in the community centre started immediately. Finished about 4pm. We then went back to our hosts place and had a couple of hours sleep, by which time dinner was ready. Finally finished eating and drinking (home made calvados!) about 1am. Wheelbarrows were required.
I rarely even finish the main course....usually look for a small portion option. It's ok if I eat with my son....he used to finish my dinner...now he takes things off my plate whilst I'm still eating. Having the small portion option usually limits choice, but have found a great pub on the Island who have robbed a top hotel of their chef...who does small portions of all his meals, so even the fancy stuff is accessible. Hurrah for the Chequers at Rookley.
by the way.... let’s revisit this for New Year’s Eve. We tend to start dinner at about 7pm and push on through to past midnight. If we have guests, everyone cooks a course and we have a bout 7-8 courses, usually 30-45 minutes between courses and small, taster portions. Fabulously social and by the end of the evening, you don’t feel as if you’ve over eaten.
