I read this in the SLP today

CHRISTIAN Dailly's Charlton future is in the balance - as the veteran Scot weighs up whether to accept he will not be a guaranted starter if he stays at The Valley.

The 37-year-old has been in talks with the Addicks over extending his stay into a third season and has no intention of hanging up his boots.

Charlton would like to keep Dailly - believing his experience could help as they hope to mount a promotion charge - but any new deal would involve a wage drop as he is not expected to play all of their games.

The Addicks have already signed former Exeter captain Matt Taylor and Sheffield Wednesday's Michael Morrison to bolster their options in that area of the pitch.

Reading into this it looks like Dailly wants a starting place each week, sometghing that we probably couldn't offer, especially when you consider the recent center back aquisitions. I personally hope that Dailly does sign, I like his enthusiasm and leadership qualities...he's a great role model for the younger players.

For me, Dailly is not good enough to be guaranteed a starting place
 
I think for the last 2 seasons he was our most important signing, hands down - And I'm glad Chrissy sees he can still offer something to the squad...

In my opinion he was still one of our most consistent performers last year, and we looked far more solid when he played - admittedly that may be due to the nature of our leaky defence more than anything

If he stays I see him as a safe 3rd choice center half, and he adds good versatility from the bench

Hope he stays
 
Surely he realises that he's not going to be a regular starter for anybody any more? A far more sensible idea for him would be to become a player-coach.

Agreed... for me it is imperative that he stays...!!

We've brought a hell of a lot of quality youngsters into our squad. However, if you remove Dailly from the mix there’s very little by way of experience left in the group.

We all expect us to have a very good season this year with the acquisitions we have made. However, there well come a spell in the season when things do not go all our own way. It’s at times like these when the experienced pros are so important to have around the place… why?…? Because they’ve been there done it and brought the T-Shirt.

They are therefore in a better position to reassure and settle down the less experienced players around them.
 
Player-coach would be perfect, BA. You are right. Plenty of experience to pass on to the younger players - and CP as well. Plus a more than able replacement for any injured or suspended players.

But would that be good enough for him?

Whether he accepts the deal or not, this is good news in my opinion.

Overall, I think I'd like him to accept the offer. Having a committed World Cup, Premier League and Rangers veteran at the club could be very valuable in bringing together a young squad, especially given how many changes there have been. He is also a very able centre back.

If he decides to move on, I wish him the very best in his future career.
 
Spot on IA and supporting 'spot on's... Dailly's a great influence but I'm glad Powell's realised he's not a first team starter, but can still play a squad part. His positioning is still spot on, he's still a great defender, but he was caught out for pace far more last year than the previous year, and I worry that that deterioration will continue. We can't afford for another 3 red cards, even if the last one was a farce.

Whatever happens, he's the closest to a Charlton legend we've got playing for the club right now, and he's only been here 2 years.
 
If Dailly has a season like last season, then he'll be suspended all the time anyway - he only played 25 league games - so he's used to not being a regular any more!

On the positive side, he has the same birthday as me! I'm not saying who's older though...
 
If the plan was for him to stay why didn't he go to Spain? He could of added so much by just being there, I would understand if he did partake in all the training.

Did Alonso train with the lads in Spain? I am worried about his lack of presents in what appears to be coming a very quick bonding squad.
 
i think chrissy has posed him the right question. if he is not prepared to sign up on those terms, he is not what we want. he should be comitted to the role we envisage
 
If we are attempting to set out our stall at the earliest possible opportunity to say that we are contenders for automatic promotion then unfortunately Dailly can not be part of our first team plans

Squad plans yes ... just not first team

No room for sentiment in this decision
 
I believe Alonso was in Spain, but was given time to organise his move to London and all the shenanigans that go with it. He is definitely committed to the cause and will play a larger part in the forthcoming friendlies. I am looking forward to seeing him in action in the near future.

If Dailly is going to take offence at not being a regular starter then we should have signed up Fortune for another year instead. He is a true Charlton legend; still an able defender and likely to be happier at playing a more peripheral role.
 
Unfortunately Jon Fortune will not be fit to play this season as he has a very serious injury which may even result in him having to retire.
 
I hope he signs.

Not only do we have an experienced centre back we also have cover at right back. I think covering the two centre back positions and right back he will get a fair amount of games. Especially considering Solly's injury record

Charlton are close to signing Wolves' Danny Batth on loan and Preston North End's Neil Mellor permenantly.
Both were targets for Gary Megson's Sheffield Wednesday but were not confident about their promotion push under the former Bolton manager.

Charlton are also considering signing former QPR and Walsall attacking midfielder Emmanuel Ledesma who would be a free transfer.

If all three are completed it should see an end to Chris Powell's summer spending spree.
