Sunderland are targeting Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder as they attempt to fill their managerial vacancy, Sky Sports News HQ understands.

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes rejected the opportunity to take over at Sunderland on Thursday after a compensation package had been agreed between the clubs.

Sky Sports News HQ understands Wilder is one of a number of candidates under consideration as Sunderland step up their search to find a replacement for David Moyes.

Wilder, who succeeded Nigel Adkins last May having led Northampton to the Sky Bet League Two title, has enjoyed a dream first season in charge at Bramall Lane, guiding the Blades to the League One title.

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes turned down the chance to take over Sunderland
The 49-year-old won 30 of his 46 league matches as United returned to the Championship following six seasons away, reaching the 100-point mark process.

In May, former Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce recommended Wilder as his replacement to Eagles chairman Steve Parish.

Sunderland have been without a manager since Moyes resigned from his position in May following the club's relegation from the Premier League.

Skp with someone alongside him. ASAP!
Definitely ASAP - Disco pants himself I fear we are in a pre-drummaville mess now and he'd sort the club boardroom out and get the fans onside while SKP was getting the players on side and ready.
New owners will need time for due diligence and will probably drag their feet.
We'll end up playing catch-up like last season if we don't appoint a manager soon - groundhog day.

I've just looked at Wikipedia for Chris Wilder - totally unimpressed seems enmeshed in lower league football and think our fans will be totally underwhelmed.
Any way he's an ex blade player and still getting his feet under the table at Sheff Utd in the Championship so why would he come here ? Absurd imo.

Quinn made some massive errors in his stint as chairman. He's no good for the boardroom. Or management. And I can't stand the way he goes on when we're on tv. Don't want Phillips either but only because I love the bloke. If it goes wrong it'd be very difficult if the crowd turns on him.

I agree up to a point but think Quinn brought a good feeling and aura to the club to lift us out of a messy situation which over rides the negatives.
Regarding an SKP appt it could be viewed negatively (bold above) but positively if it goes well he'll be a solid gold icon here. I'm still really deflated about the absurd shenanigans of Bain having a jolly to Florida and DM rejecting us - telephone, skype etc to determine his intent ??????.
Worryingly its not unexpected and typical of Sunderland - we do not do easy and straightforward - messes regularly happen.

Marcus, who do you feel we could get who would engage with the fans and team to lead us onwards ?

Not sure who could. But Quinn brought a feel good and cost the club almost as much as Short and his mess ups. He's not someone I want in our boardroom. As for management. I'm not sure precisely who could bring what we need.

Stick an interim in or find somebody unemployed. If this is true, and I don't believe it is. We've learnt nowt from what's just happened. An employed man is not going to give up everything he's built for a job he could get the boot from as little as a month down the line.

Yeah I'm not disagreeing with your view of Quinn but I really think SKP could be our saviour with an experienced head alongside.
A bit of a calculated gamble but he is emotionally way ahead of our other options and you need too be emotionally switched on to manage Sunderland imv :emoticon-0148-yes:

What on earth are you on about?

'Emotionally way ahead' - what does that even mean?

He gets Sunderland -he took his professional career to another level by comming here and he wants to return here - emotional attachment imv.
Similar as Stefan Schwartz who reportedly wants to come.
But with a new owner bidding mess up now ongoing - who knows - a typical messy sunderland foot shooting
