I know it's the case with many employers, mine included. But it's applied subjectively. There are many ways an employer can choose to deal with it even with the policy in place. That's about the thrust of it. DBS wouldn't come into this btw unless he's prosecuted and receives a criminal record.

Maybe coppers, but not prison guards, most I've known are more than capable of looking after themselves.
