Moron! These 'Championship standard' players kept us in the Premier League and got us to 12th in the Premier League. I think they are quite a lot better than 'Championship standard' you could probably call them Premier League players now! Are you Col Who Mikey? That 'fact' would certainly suggest you are!
frankly, holt won't require a three year contract (he's very unlikely to get that anywhere to be honest) because if it is security he's after, he'll get it by signing a two year deal somewhere else on double the money we can afford.
I think this agent is a stirring little ****, but there is likely to be an element of truth in what he says. It really doesn't surprise me that Holt would want to retire at Norwich after what he's been through here and realistically at 34 may just be the sort of time he would think about it. Now it sounds like McNally made the right call not giving him a third year, but I'm quite surprised by the reports that he said "you're too old" because tbh I think that's not fair. It should have been a case of saying "look, we'd love to keep you on as long as possible, but we can't afford to put the club in a precarious financial position. What we can do is tell you that if you keep maintaining your performance, we'll have no choice but to continue your contract, so we'll review again in January and next year and see where we're at". Bit more diplomatic that way I think, and then it wouldn't have ruled out completely the option of a third year. So that way, if it's true that Holt wasn't looking to get a huge payrise, simply that he wanted to keep playing longer, it would have worked. Of course, the agent could have been making it all up, in which case he can **** off...
I still think a performance related clause triggering an extra year on his contract would have been the way forwards. It'd motivate him and allow us to get rid if he isn't good enough any longer. Anybody know that with our wage cap being lower than many Championship sides, whether players have clauses triggering a drop in wages if we get relegated?
Yeah that's exactly the sort of thing I meant. There almost certainly will be for every player bar the youth team players. I'm 80% certain it's rubbish when newspapers report that there were no relegation wage-cut clauses in contracts for players like Roger Johnson- it would put some lawyers in serious trouble unless they had advised against it.
i personally think holt is too old to be getting a three year deal at the drop of a hat. even some of the best players in the world like lampard only get year by year deals when they are getting older. why he can't just sit tight for 6 months and then have another look i just don't know. well, actually, we do know - his agent is being a dick and he's going along with it. he's being very selfish and i for one would rather he left this summer than stays if this is to be his attitude. if he makes a stand and shows some commitment to the club then he could get back in but it looks highly unlikely today.
I think you've hit the nail on the head. It's quite clear it was the wrong thing to do offering him three years at his age BUT you don't tell your missus that sort of thing! You phrase it more gently... If Holt is still here by August, I imagine we'll see him working his arse off on the pitch again- that's the sort of player he is. He's obviously thrown his toys out the pram, but if they can just clear the air in private, give him reassurances about his future here, I'm positive something can be worked out. The alternative is that we get around£5m for him, which isn't to be sniffed at.
one thing is for sure, we won't sell holt unless the new manager says he's ok with that, so he won't be getting his wish anytime soon i'd imagine.
Which could work in our favour quite nicely! I don't think Holt can argue with that, and in the mean time it's a chance for him to think about his situation, maybe reassess his stance, which might make him easier to placate in future negotiations. He's also going to read all the media speculation, and if he doesn't like the idea of playing for West Ham, who appear to be the only ones to have placed a genuine (if derisory) bid, then he might think twice about pursuing a move. If he wants it, he still has a future at this club, it's down to him if he wants it.
Yep, I'm always surprised when clubs bid for a player when the other club doesn't have a manager- surely they realise that they're going to have to wait?!? If we do get someone foreign in, I imagine that they won't be particularly keen on Holt though.
we might not appoint a foreign manager. in fact, i doubt we will - i think mcnally is simply 'putting it out there' as an option
Going back to Favre, he's nearly completed a deal to take Junior Hoilett to Monchengladbach, so I'd hazard a guess that he sees his immediate future in Germany.
would you leave a club about to play in the champions league and with a genuine chance of winning the german league next season to join norwich? highly unlikely to be honest
Very unlikely I know, I mainly posted it as I've seen his name on a couple of threads on here. Unfortunately with the number of similar threads, it's hard to keep track of what's been posted where. We could really do with a single 'Manager debate thread' and a single 'Holt debate thread' in my opinion. Back on topic, looking at the way Favre sets his teams out, I'd be more than happy to have him here if he's interested.
As, frankly, would I. Hi guys, by the way. Favre and Hughton are my first choices, closely followed by Laudrup and Poyet. You can get 25/1 on Nigel Worthington? Thoughts lads?
I'm inclined to think that this is probably nearer the truth than just being told he is "too old". Unless there has been some other friction between Holt and Mc'Nally, or the club actually wants to get rid of Holt, what would be the point of being so antagonistic?
