Ahh, my bad then, I thought it was an ancient festival that was hundreds of years old. Makes more sense now and makes the criticism a lot more justified and probably means there isn't a hidden agenda behind the criticism as there is often when Russia, China etc. are brought into an argument.

Well if I haven't heard about it, so it doesn't count. If It's not on bbc sport or not606 Liverpool then its not worth talking about <whistle>

Unless you're invited to a Royal banquet you'll never see swan on a menu in this country.

It might be worthwhile remembering here that it is not just a matter of different countries having different tastes because China has absolutely no laws regarding cruelty to animals of any breed or type. There has been evidence to suggest that dogs have been tortured just before death in order to improve the meat quality (through increased adrenalin) - though this is not specific to this festival. The Swiss actually severed diplomatic connections to China over 10 years ago because of the Chinese treatment of St. Bernards (a delicacy in China) which had been initially sold by the Swiss for mountain rescue but had actually found their way onto Chinese dinner plates.

China - We'd like some St. Bernards.
    The Swiss - What for?
China - For mountain rescue purposes.
The Swiss - Of course, we're happy to help.
    China - Yum!
The Swiss - What do you mean yum?
China - Ummm, nothing....it's Chinese for thanks.

  7. True but I doubt you'll see dog on a menu either ;)

Same could be said for things like kangaroo, bison, camel, zebra, etc but I've bought and eaten them all within the last six months :)

I've seen a nasty PETA vid a while back on furs in china, some of the poor batards were skinned alive, laying there on a pile of skinned carcasses, still looking around. ****in awful. If the animal is lucky they kill them it's with electrified rods first.

It was pretty disturbing but these people were doing it without malice, just working away. What I found cruel they just didn't seem to think about it at all as they killed hundeds of the animals.

Only if the duck used to flavour your crisps was fed with organic vegetables and read a nursery rhyme each night
