In a lot of ways bro. It's not just physical fitness either. You need mental fortitude to paddle out on big days and learn how to keep control of your body's natural reaction to fear and danger. Also getting held down under water, requires you to be calm when **** is out of control. And some days just paddling out when it's ****ing freezing can be a test of nerve. It's good for body mind and spirit.
Guess it all depends on how you define fitness. People go to gym and do weights ffs, and spend time preening in front of a mirror....I get paid for lifting stuff 8 hours a day...That ain;t fitness in my view, its vanity.. Now yourself, you go surfing and cycling, same as @Chief goes running....Now that is fitness to me. Cardio stuff..
dopamine mate ... everyone needs a hobby .. doesn't matter what it is. I don't think I'll try surfing up here though tbh.
Gyms are boring imo. I'd much rather be outside staying fit. The idea of using a bike, treadmill, rowing machine in the gym would bore me to ****ing tears, but I suppose they give folk in the cities easy access to fitness. I use the pool here in the winter, but that's only because opportunities to get out doors can be limited when the weather turns to ****.
I have to be honest i dont get why people us the gym to run.. I used to run long distance outside in all conditions .. much more enjoyable and of course free..
The time when I was most stacked was probably when I worked as a labourer. Lugging bags of cement around, pushing barrows full of mortar, carrying hods of bricks up scaffolding, digging ditches etc. Hard physical work, but keeps you in shape
Yeah when I did that job it was probably the fittest I've ever been, espescially as I'm not one to improve fitness in my own time.
not this again mate I worked in supermarket 10pm till 7am years and went to the gym after ... on pop or produce .. ok it's not easy but you aren't down the pit
