Saw a private specialist on Monday about the knee, next step will be MRI and then probable op to remove debris etc. Feels ok though. Tried it out yesterday after a press sesh, manged 40 mins pain free on the treadmill. Not sure if op needed, but bound to flare up as soon as I decide not to bother. I do know I'm unlikely to ever run on road again, it causes too much knee and shin hassle to be that arsed. Plus being a fat **** doesn't help obvs.
This years first 100 ride. Sheffield to Lincoln to watch the bike racing then home. Thankfully it’s mainly flat, was almost no wind. bit sore today. So just get mountain bike ready for winter today.
Watch this for a rally from the Thomas Cup Final yesterday. Not surprising you and Chief have problems with your knees if you played like this. Almost had to go and ask the maids to keep the noise down last night as their celebrating was annoying me while I was watching Newcastle lose.
Mine was from squash. I think squash is even harder on the knees, loads of lunges at speed, it's an absolute killer. Sadly, doubt I'll play again. By weird coincidence I'm in hospital this second and the nurse is the wife of one of my old squash team. Apparently it's started again post Covid, I just need to not be tempted.
Would agree. Think its the sideways movement in all the rackets sports that do some of the damage but the lunges forwards are pretty unique to squash and you tend to slam your front foot down into the floor when you are playing an attacking shot. Been lucky that I haven't needed any knee surgery despite playing lots of sport. Worst thing you can do though is to start playing a sport again after a long time not playing it. Did this with tennis and had to have months of physiotherapy to build up knee stability and strength, after an injury, probably made worse by carrying extra weight. Now do a good 30mins of stretching exercises every morning before running, as I notice a lot of hamstring and calf stiffness later in the day if I don't. Muscles seem to lose their stretchiness as you get older. Not drinking enough liquids after exercise makes it worse as well.
My missus is a yoga nut, so she’s shown me a few stretches to keep everything supple. I’m a firm believer that if you don’t stretch then you risk your muscles shortening and with it the likelihood of over stretching them during exercise and tearing the fibres. Also important to do proper warm up and warm down exercises after intense exercise
I have a fitness instructor who sets me up with a load of stretching routines. I didn't realise that the stretches you do before and after exercise are different - dynamic before and then more static after. The after ones make a huge difference in how your muscles tighten up afterwards. It also became clear to me how rounded I had got from years of working at a computer all day. He has me doing this angel wall stretch - essentially standing with my back to the wall, with lower back and shoulders pressed against the wall and arms stretched out like a cross, with wrists and backs of hands flat against the wall. Then bend your arms at the elbows while keeping your hands and wrists against the wall and see how high you can get them. When I started as soon as I moved arms above horizontal my wrists came off the wall. Now can get them up to about 20degrees. Maybe as you don't work at a computer (apart from on here and suspect time spent on that has decreased dramatically since Hiag passed way) you might find it easier.
Just tried that stretch, it’s a good one. Noticed how it also stretches the muscles on the spine side of your shoulder blades. That’s an area where I get stiffness, from paddling. I’m still recovering from a neck and spinal compression injury from earlier in the year. Fortunately, just muscular/facia and no mechanical damage. But the stretches are helping. I also use one of those wooden roller spinal stretch things. They release tension between the vertebrae and loosen up the muscles that get tight when the spine is stiff.
Never used one of those but have one of these foam rollers which are for the bigger muscles. It may be foam but its still painful when you get all your body weight and start rolling it.
Got an MRI Wednesday morning that will lead to some minor surgery. There's definitely something in there, it'll be a case of clean it out and let heal properly. Squash will be a no no for certain. My main concern is that I carry on begin able to play golf till I die and that I can go skiing and it not be a worry. Sod everything else. Treadmill running should be fine ultimately as well.
Maids not involved in my stretching routine thank you. I can do it myself with some advice from my Personal Trainer. Maid 1 is on a fitness kick at the moment walking/running, badminton and even half an hour with my PT before my session. Reckon she has a good chance in Jakarta's Fittest Maid 2022. Got a puncture at the weekend while out without my driver. First time I have had to change a tyre myself in 30years living here. Bloody heavy wheels on a big 4x4. Driver was actually shocked that I did it myself so I didn't tell him that I tried to call him first to come out and do it but couldn't get through!
