Cheltenham Day 4 Daily Racing Thread

I have posted so many times on here the pitfalls of ante post betting .. as in dont bother! I go every year to Cheltenham and every year some of my mates tell me all about their ante post woes every year - yet they do it every year - its a standing taking point and funny for me as most of them are bets that have simply sunk before the day even gets off!

 

Just got back from Cheltenham - a first and 2 places....what a day although i didnt see Lord Windermere coming!

I don't look at your posts so you might have told everyone else but I can assure you i was not told by you.
The horse fell when travelling like a dream.
I'd be confident I've had a better Festival than you so please don't think we're on the same level because I feel like I'm talking to a novice.

 

Your first post says Briar Hill lads Briar Hill etc etc .. ! ( i know what im talking about etc etc) Talk about a lot of ****!! I thought you were the champ!

There was a chap on my table that couldn't stop blathering to his friends over the top of Nicholls, Scu et al.

I only ask because he was a complete also ran as well based on what he said that night.

I think we all know the pitfalls of ante post Captain. It has to be considered in 2 parts:

(a) what are the odds against it running in the race
(b) what are the odds of it winning if it turns up

As regards (b) there is also the gamble as to what else might turn up.

I don't know how to calculate (a).

If I thought a horse was a 6/4 shot given a run (ie I thought it could be 6/4 on the day) and it was on offer at 10/1 AP I would think taking the 10/1 with a view to laying off as the price shortens does pass on to someone else the risk of it not running; unless it's out before you get the chance to.

It's a risky business and one has to assess whether the risk is allowed for in the price.

For me, it's hard enough picking the winner of a major race when I have in front of me a list of runners on the day, with all the form, all the tales pre race, the going, jockey bookings, stable form etc etc. So what chance picking out the winner 6 months before the race.

 

I wasn't there Bob... it wasnt me. i know a lot of people in Bristol (trust me) . 61 of us went today... but i wasnt there. Hope it was a good night for you and they entertained you appropraitely.. take a bit of banter mate!

 

Your last paragraph is spot on Ron...People who do ante post are completely stupid in my view . I have mates that do it and they know my views.. Just my opinion though!

I wouldn't say they were stupid Captain. But I appreciate how difficult it is and, in the right circumstances, the risks can be minimised.

You are right. I was very bullish re Briar Hill. He fell. The winner tells you everything about his chance had he not fallen. The best horse in the race fell. It happens.

You didn't tell anyone anything though. You said you fancied Deputy Dan. He came 2nd so you lost aswell. Last instalment lost also. Two of your confident bets down the drain. Caid Di Berlais - Nichols will have a winner.

Did you have a good day ? Sounds like you had one winner out of 7 to me.
