Champion Hurdle could turn into a farce actually. You have the DRF early Feb, Cheltenham mid-March, Aintree mid-April and Punchestown end of April. Constitution Hill probably won’t run again before the Champion Hurdle (come on Nicky, run him in the Betfair Hurdle !!!!!!) and then he will likely go to Aintree and that’s it. So if you are Mullins you are probably thinking you want to win the Irish Champion Hurdle early Feb at Fairyhouse and then the Punchestown race end of April and send your 2nd string to Cheltenham Champion Hurdle and Aintree Hurdle for place money. That would leave Constitution Hill to take on the likes of those in the Relkeel Hurdle and the Irish second string as he won’t go to Fairyhouse and he won’t go to Punchestown. Michael Buckley must be more sporting than that surely?
The Closutton handler was also pleased with the performances of the placed horses, saying: “It was a cracker of a run from Vauban, having his first run back. He’s only a four-year-old and people tend to forget that. “I was very pleased with that. He’ll probably have another run and then we’ll see if he’s good enough to go to Cheltenham. On today’s run I’m very happy that he’s progressed and is coming along nicely. “He travelled very sweet, all the rest of the horses had runs. For his first run in championship company against older horses, I thought it was excellent. He’s way ahead of where I thought he was.
I see there is some love in the racing press for the performance of Stattler in defeat at Tramore and his Gold Cup chances. I cannot be certain, but I don't believe a horse has ever won the National Hunt Chase and gone on to win the Gold Cup. Has to be an off-putting stat.
The entries for the Queen Mother Champion Chase (14), Ryanair Chase (27) and Cheltenham Gold Cup (27) are out - Racing Post article here. A couple of interesting declarations - Shishkin is NOT declared for the QMCC but is declared for the Ryanair and CGC whilst Galopin des Champs is entered for both the Ryanair and CGC. Otherwise pretty much as expected with plenty hedging their bets with dual entries. Impressive Dipper Novices Chase winner The Real Whacker is the only novice entered in the CGC.
Dysart was my big bet last year. He would have done well to get placed tbh, his race was done when he fell.
My Lucky 15 is down to 2 runners NH Chase - Gerri Colombe 20/1 Arkle - Appreciate It 8/1 Ballymore - James's Gate (Won't run) Bumper - Demandrivingdouvan (Won't run) I also tried to be clever with Blazing Khal and I backed him in the Browns advisory. My thinking was he could be a GC horse and they'd want to send him over fences this season to prep that. Spectacularly wrong!
I’ve backed Blazing Khal for the stayers hurdle but have you any news of him? Is he injured again or planning to run soon?
“He needs to be out and running at Christmas really, to be realistically running at Cheltenham. “We haven’t given up yet, but we are running a bit short of time for the Stayers’.” Didn't run so, if what he says is to be believed, he won't make Cheltenham
I agree. He just charged through hurdles but the big fences have definitely helped him maintain more control in his racing.
Just like last year I note that Angels Breath has been given entries in both the Ryanair and the CGC. 100/1 available re the former and 125's the latter. The 9YO hasn't actually ran since December '19 and since then has moved from Seven Barrows to Sam Thomas. It would be great to see Angels Breath back, on track, but until he gets a 5 day entry, anywhere, I guess you can't realistically start to believe that will happen. At the backend of '19 he looked one 'eck of a prospect, people, and has won Grade 2's over both fences and hurdles. Away from Grade 1's (and this is a nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more....) if Angels Breath does return handicap marks of 153 (C) and 146 (H) don't look that harsh...
