Optimistic Chelsea fans are clinging to their supposed good recent run of form at Old Trafford to support their belief that the CL tie is not finished. Now I agree that the tie is still alive, but simply because Chelsea have enough quality to beat us 2-1 or 2-0 next Tuesday. Nothing to do with any perceived hoodoo over us at OT. Because their recent record (as in, that enjoyed by this particular Chelsea team) away to United is nothing special.
In fact, over the last 5 full seasons - 2005/6 to 2009/10 - their record at the Theatre of Dreams is no better than Arsenal's or Man City's, and only marginally better than Liverpool's. Do these other teams have this reputation of a favourable record at Old Trafford? No, so why do Chelsea? See below:
Utd vs Chelsea 3 Utd wins, 1 draw, 1 Chelsea win (8 Utd goals, 3 Chelsea goals)
05/06 1-0 (Fletcher)
06/07 1-1 (Saha - Carvalho)
07/08 2-0 (Tevez, Saha)
08/09 3-0 (Vidic, Rooney, Berbatov)
09/10 1-2 (Macheda - J.Cole, Drogba)
Utd vs City 3 Utd wins, 1 draw, 1 City win (11 Utd goals, 7 City goals)
05/06 1-1 (Van Nistelrooy - Barton)
06/07 3-1 (Rooney, Saha, Ronaldo - Trabelsi)
07/08 1-2 (Carrick - Vassell, Benjani)
08/09 2-0 (Tevez 2)
09/10 4-3 (Rooney, Fletcher 2, Owen - Barry, Bellamy 2)
Utd vs Arsenal 3 Utd wins, 1 draw, 1 Arsenal win (6 Utd goals, 3 Arsenal goals)
05/06 2-0 (Rooney, Park)
06/07 0-1 (Adebayor)
07/08 2-1 (Ronaldo, Hargreaves - Adebayor)
08/09 0-0
09/10 2-1 (Rooney, Diaby og - Arshavin)
Utd vs Liverpool 4 Utd wins, 1 Liverpool win (9 Utd goals, 5 Liverpool goals)
05/06 1-0 (Ferdinand)
06/07 2-0 (Scholes, Ferdinand)
07/08 3-0 (Brown, Ronaldo, Nani)
08/09 1-4 (Ronaldo - Torres, Gerrard, Aurelio, Dossena)
09/10 2-1 (Rooney, Park - Torres)
So where does this come from? Just desperation on behalf of the Chelsea following? It's strange how these suppositions grow from nowhere. But as United fans, we should be used to myths by now.
