Just started 'Death Row' by Mark Pearson, not impressed so far. Too winding and full of ott description and character detail. The best writers don't tend to do a lot on character detail. Might have to can it.
Reading: 'England's Greatest Defender, The Untold Story of Neil Franklin'....by Alfie Potts Harmer... About a quarter of the way in. Superbly well researched and written. Highly recommended by this jury.
Just finished The President is Missing by James Patterson and Bill Clinton Good light fiction. I enjoyed it.
Not a big patterson fan. I did read Mistress, which was a tad OTT. Read Neal Hardin he's brilliant. All his books are available on Amazon
Ah Well You’re wrong They’re both good if you’re reading to switch off and not needing to think. They’re effectively the literary equivalent a very large scotch I like them
It's about a girl called Natasha. Who looks like Elsie. It's essentially a 1250 page farce about her attempts to avoid ending up in South West London. Which is a place she simply doesn't want to go. With hilarious consequences. Well worth a read. I think.
Feel free to skip the last forty pages or so. Who needs Tolstoy's views on the philosophy of history? Indeed, I found his little digressions on this a little annoying as they interrupted the narrative drive. I definitely recommend Daniel Defoe's "A Journal of the Plague Year" for our current time. Written in 1722, it's a fictional account of the 1665 London plague and is scarily contemporary: panic-buying, social distancing, the government understating the number of deaths, it's all there. Time to get the red paint out and go and paint crosses on the neighbours' doors, I think.
Just read The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August:, The Sudden Appearance of Hope and Touch by Claire North - All very good Now reading Children of Time (The Children of Time Novels) by Adrian Tchaikovsky which is a good read also
Terrible analogy A large scotch is quality They’re just pap and ok imho garbage poorly done and nicked from other books a lot of it.
You and I have disagreed about pretty much everything the last few months on here. But I'm in full agreement with you on this. Find both authors tiresome to read and the plots get increasingly absurd through the book. It's not a snobbish thing as I like some Tom Clancy books and others from the genre, but these two are like really bad quality fast food.
Reading the Rum Diary by Hunter S. Thompson. Excellent book to calm those who think they have a drink problem.
Just finished ‘Marine A’. The story of Sgt Alexander Blackman and his conviction for ‘murdering’ a wounded insurgent in Helmand in 2011. Decent account of a proper soldier doing a horrendously hard job in the most dangerous square mile on the planet. Should have been given a medal, not arrested and sent to prison.
Just finished the best football related book I've ever read. 'England's Greatest Defender..the untold story of Neil Franklin' by Alfie Potts Harmer, who happens to be the grandson of Raich Carter. 291 pages of wall to wall memories of when even the best players were just ordinary blokes earning £20 a week.
Glad you enjoyed the book, I also thought it was excellent, though Alfie's not Raich Carter's grandson, if he was Raich Carter would be my dad.
