18th August update; Josh Magennis signs a 1 year contract extension, until summer 2019. Good news I think, and it gives me an excuse to bump the thread. There's been so little activity in the transfer window for Charlton lately that this thread was about to drop off the first page...
20th August update: The squad lists by position & squad number have been updated to add in the following squad players; 24 Regan Charles-Cook 31 Josh Umerah 35 Ashley Maynard-Brewer 37 Reeco Hacket-Fairchild None of these players were listed in our squad on August 5th, but all were included in our full squad list on the back of the programme for the Northampton home game yesterday.
29th August update; Josh Umerah is loaned out to Wycombe Wanderers until January 2018. Personally I'm not overly concerned about this. Umerah may shine there, and we'll get him back in January match-sharp and confident after bagging some League Two goals. But his absence in the meantime won't make much difference to our promotion chances in my view. If Charlton don't gain promotion this season, there are likely to be more important reasons for our failure than this loan deal.
A big test of the Belgian Bellends & their "we have changed" theory coming up today. 4th in the league & a promising start - but reliant on one fairly injury prone No.9 No bollox please - just sign a striker. We all know there is plenty of money in the kitty
There's always the January transfer window to look forward to. The last one was a great success.......................oh.
After this transfer window, maybe they should replace "Red Red Robin" with the Theme from Annie over the tannoy ? "Tomorrow, tomorrow, there will always be tomorrow ..."
I'll do a final update on the transfer tables probably tomorrow afternoon, when the dust has settled and I have recovered from my uncontrollable excitement at the loan signing of Joe Dodoo. That's it now - we can only go on from here and hope that 9 points from our first 12 is not a false dawn. If we have around 20 points by the end of September (our first 10 games) Charlton will be on course for a top 6 finish, possibly an automatic place. If we have 15 or fewer points by then, I would say it's already over as far as our promotion hopes are concerned.
Where were you last night ? I nearly tabled a motion of no confidence in the 606 Mods. We needed you at the helm on such a busy Transfer Deadline night for Charlton.
1st September update; The tables are almost finalised now. The only information I don't have is the squad numbers for George Lapslie and Joe Dodoo. To me the squad does look more compact now, and we definitely have shed some dead wood. I am glad to see the backs of several high earning failures from the past, as well as players who did not achieve much last season. Of the players who have gone, I would have maybe liked to have kept Nicky Ajose and Andrew Crofts. But the players we really needed to hang on to have all been successfully retained; Holmes, Bauer, Pearce, Magennis. The players around them now look more purposeful and should provide better support. Already Fosu, Dasilva, Forster-Caskey and several others have looked bright and useful during August. Two major worries still linger, though my doubts about Ben Amos are slightly lessened now we seem to be keeping Dillon Phillips around. The striker situation is the one glaring weakness that remains. I know Robinson plays one striker with (in theory) a wealth of support from attacking midfielders/wingers, but Charlton now have only one proven striker. And he only scored 10 goals for us last season. The opportunity to give our team a real cutting edge has been missed. Joe Dodoo may turn out to be a sensation, and then again he may not. Lack of goals has been our undoing so often in he past, that if we lose Magennis and/or Holmes for long periods their absence will cost us vital promotion points. The risk of Charlton having a really decent season, yet missing out on a top 6 place by the odd point or the odd place is very real in my opinion. That would be as infuriating in its own way as the nothing season we had in 2016-17. Injuries play a part in the destiny of every team in the league. Once again however they may end up playing a huge part in our season. More so than they should do.
