    3rd August update;

Attacking midfielder Ben Reeves has signed a 2 year contract with Charlton.
The third proper quality signing of the summer in my view, and a proper step in the right direction. Hopefully Reeves can stay injury free and give us that much needed spark of creativity.

Also some newcomers now have squad numbers, and a few existing squad members have had numbers changed.
Here are the ones I could see on the 'first team squad' page of the CAFC website (or have already been announced)

    1. Ben Reeves
    3. Jay Dasilva
    6. Jason Pearce ... (was 16)
    7. Tarique Fosu
    10. Billy Clarke
    14. Mark Marshall
    23. Joe Aribo ... (was 32)
    32. Tony Watt ... (was 7)

Naby Sarr and Ben Reeves don't seem to have squad numbers yet...
The squad lists in the first posts have been updated to show this information.

Reeves is number 12 - there was a pic of that on the clubs Twitter.

    12th August update:

Tony Watt has left Charlton Athletic.
He's gone to a Club in the Belgian 2nd division apparently.
Personally I'm not sorry. He has talent, but unfortunately Watt is more trouble than he is worth.

Obviously we need to replace him.
To be honest I think Charlton need two good quality strikers now.
    We only currently have
    Magennis,
    Lee Novak,
    Karlan Ahearne-Grant,
    Billy Clarke.

Two of these four are simply not good enough to play an important role in a promotion campaign, and one is not really a striker anyway.
We cannot score enough goals to get anywhere near the top 2 places this season, and probably even the top 6 will be a foirlorn hope unless something is done in the next 20 days!

Ben Amos has looked very unconvincing in goal so far. How he ended up earning £18,000 a week at Bolton is a mystery.

Robinson's thinking over Dillon Phillips is baffling - if you are good enough, you are old enough. On all evidence so far, Phillips is a better keeper than Amos.

    I completely agree.
Unfortunately Ben Amos has conceded (on average) more than 1 goal per game in his last three or four seasons.
I've nothing personal against him, but the simple fact is teams that concede more than a goal per game do not win promotion.

    EDIT:

    Well, almost never anyway.
Sheffield United conceded 47 goals last season (1.02 per game on average) but they scored 92, which is exactly 2 per game.
Second placed Bolton Wanderers conceded only 36 goals (0.78 per game on average).

A further indictment of this useless CEO that arguably the two most important positions in the side - goalkeeper and striker - still need filling. (Although Robinson thinks that he has filled the former).

I reckon that selling Watt must have taken another £300,000 pa minimum off the wage bill - how about we actually sign a player for a fee now ?

We need a 20+ goal a season striker (a BWP) who is willing to accept a low wage...... not many of those around!

Doesn't take a genius to see that Novak, Watt, Magennis & Clarke won't score a lot between them. Thankfully the owner is really ambitious for Charlton (source - P.May) so let's see that fat Belgian chequebook out this week huh <cheers>

They have had all summer to get this done. Fourteen weeks.

This is Karl Robinson's squad now. He's had his transfer windows. Nobody can defend him if we don't challenge for promotion this season.

    At the end of April after that last nothing season every Charlton fan was asking the same question;
Are we going to really try to build a promotion winning team this summer, or is it going to be a botch job on the cheap yet again?

In 19 days fans will have the final answer to that question. But in truth I think we already know the answer.

One ray of hope at least from this summer; with several high earning players now off the payroll and only four squad members on contracts longer than summer 2019 Charlton will look more attractive to a prospective buyer.
Promotion or not, it must be likely that RD will sell the Club next summer if not sooner.

But @lardiman , you are forgetting that Duchatelet's No.1 employee said after the Bristol Rovers win that "we are getting our Charlton back"

According to the fat gobby Northerner, who only discovered Charlton recently, we now need to get behind the team.

    Anyway, that's enough about Reams.

What does Karl Robinson think ?

Carrying on the Roland tradition of signing players who can't get a game for their own clubs, Amos has to go down as a KR signing.

But if RD wants to sell the Club for profit, surely he'll need a promotion this season.

Thousands of fans know he's at Charlton for the wrong reasons, because "winning games" may not be "important to him", but it is for fans.

Anyway surely for financial reasons alone, he has to see that the squad is genuinely improved this time.?

He was very much a KR signing but now isn't the time to start writing players off.

Amos has made a poor start though.

Robinson's justification for picking him ahead of Phillips is also laughable - that he likes a bloke who fills the goal and makes a lot of noise.

He could have picked Reams in that case.

Arriving at a club so close to the season is never a good thing for a goalkeeper. It's why you very rarely see many clubs go and purchase a number 1 in January too. It's a risk

Seemed a desperation signing, considering the problems KR was having signing a goalie as summer went on. To sign a goalie who had hardly played this year and give him the number one shirt was risky, especially since it must have come with assurances about being first choice. A goalie does need the confidence of his manager, and should not be dropped for one or two mistakes, but whether or not he deserves to stay first choice ahead of Phillips may become subject for debate as the season progresses.

    15th August update;

Apologies chaps, problems with image hosts led to the player tables disappearing for a short while.

However that should not happen again now, as I have discovered how to upload the tables directly to this forum without the need for a 'third party' host!
    :emoticon-0126-nerd:
Bit annoyed with myself for not working it out sooner to be honest.
Anyway, hopefully the uploaded files should be stable from now on...
