This has actually turned into a decent debate in the end. I do think people need to realise football is a different arena to real life, though. No point trying to re-iterate my points though as many posters have already, Just has at least the same amount vehemently opposed them. Guess it's just a fact that some people are sensitive (brainwashed PC brigade, swallow up what the media tells them), and some people like to have a laugh and wind the oppo up (knuckle dragging, Neanderthals). I must say there has been a fair increase in the sensitive type since the premier league years, coincidence???

I think many younger fans grew up with sanitised pundit-rich tv coverage rather than the real thing. The Tv coverage back then was nowhere near as politicised as it is now.

(Have you seen how the BBC keeps ramming women's football down our collective neck despite convincing empirical proof that the public doesn't give a **** in real terms?)

Most older fans did their early watching in the flesh and grew up with a more open-minded approach and did not need to be told what to think.

It's more a case of evolution. In the same way the original Neanderthals died out so will the modern day versions.
Civilisation marches on and those who enjoy a bit of racism will eventually have their ignorance exposed.
Ultimately even they'll be forced to admit it's possible to wind-up and taunt the opposition without stooping to the lowest depths possible.

That was almost more nonsensical garble than your usual offerings in a debate that's beyond you.

If you're asking for proof. Given it was on the old rivals site and commented on later with links to the quotes from officials, it's probably recoverable on google.

I'll not consider taking a camera phone screen shot just for you though.

I thought the point was self explanatory, but in case anyone else struggled. it was to show that misguided clowns can make mountains out molehills even when the mole hill itself didn't exist.

Some people think because they think something is racist it is, and that anything associated with race is beyond discussion, comment or humour. In global terms, such people are the minority.

I've got to say, i love the shameless hypocrisy and irony of people trying to be offensive to create a reaction to their reply.

I don't think that is down to the Premier League.

I think it is because every single generation tends to be more accepting, open-minded and generally more liberal than the last. Looking back, history always favours the younger generation, and we are simply part of history. (Not that i'm saying all young people are right, and anyone over 30 is wrong.)

In 40 years time, the 'Liberal PC Brigade' which I am part of will probably be outraged by 'brainwashed sensitive liberals' who support the banning of meat from the concourse. I've had a steak and kidney pie at football for the last 40 years, who are they to stop me? Football was far better when we ate Steak pies, and let humans do the refereeing.

Ah ok thanks for clearing that up, tbh it's a difficult discussion to follow and some of us clowns do appreciate your condescending and patronising posts explaining it to us.

Just out of interest, could someone provide a list of acceptable subjects to bait opposing fans (and their town of origin) about?

(Remember this is an adult forum not some trendy liberal sixth form college)

Grow up. It's been a reasonable discussion so far given the topic. If it's beyond you, just sit it out.

    Me sensitive!!

All I am saying is that if, and this is a big if, anyone dares to say what they chanted when they are a lone voice in a pub full of Leeds fans, do it! If they can't or daren't, they should shut the **** up.

Anything that I say, I am prepared to say anywhere. If you doubt me that's fine, I've got the scars. I face this almost daily in my work. I hate ****ing cowards who hide in a crowd or behind a keyboard. It's normally me who gets the abuse. Oddly when I get them by themselves they call me mate and become pally.

So be racist, homophobic or what ever, but don't cry when it all goes tits up!

Mel my point was nobody can hear 5 people except those stood very close so that is different to 500 people or 5000 or whatever , I'm not condoning racism in any way

In my experience racists are of limited intelligence generally

Not read it all but for me the whole matchday experience was better at Boothferry park when there was standing..

Some of the chants would get you locked up nowadays..

As someone said I remember everyone in the kempton singing the Harry Roberts is our friend song to wind plod up..

The terraces have gone , young Kids off the estates can't afford to go anymore .. There's not much atmosphere at games .. Maybe it's just me but it's quite dull at footy for all the so called improvements that have been made ..

Maybe as we have got older some of the stuff we use to sing doesn't seem as funny as it once did ..as a kid I would have joined in with chants about Gary Speed but I really wouldn't now ..

I wouldn't report any one though or point anyone out to the stewards or PC Plod ..

Give free tickets out in the schools and give us the North stand as standing only Mr Allan for home fans ..

    If only !!

Only if you are going to get out your "Royal Doulton periwinkle tea service" for such an auspicious occasion.

I just never had Fergie down as a weak limp wristed gay 6th form bleeding heart effeminate man the fuk up should know its been going on for decades calls it footie must be new to the game probably only started watching football since the premeirship type

    "Dear Supporter,
"The great support you gave the team here last season has seen our allocation back up to near-full levels. I want you to continue that progress today.
"But today is about much more than not blocking gangways. Today is about thinking hard about what makes United the best club in the world.
"Our rivalry with Liverpool is based on a determination to come out on top - a wish to see us crowned the best against a team that held that honour for so long.
"It cannot and should never be based on personal hatred. Just ten days ago, we heard the terrible, damning truth about the deaths of 96 fans who went to watch their team try and reach the FA Cup final and never came back.
"What happened to them should wake the conscience of everyone connected with the game.
"Our great club stands with our great neighbours Liverpool today to remember that loss and pay tribute to their campaign for justice. I know I can count on you to stand with us in the best traditions of the best fans in the game.
    "Yours sincerely, Sir Alex Ferguson."

This is a legitimate target and should be exploited to the full dont you agree agro, dutch kevin??

Chaz, you're so far off target with that it's beyond belief. What's sad is that you won't even take the time to work out why, you'll just come back begging for someone to explain it to you.

There are more developed, liberalized countries than this one, and I see every single one of them has football fans more edgy than in Britain.

If fans had been stabbed and a player committed suicide at one team in a derby fixture in Holland, Norway, Sweden, Germany or others, you can bet your arse there'd have been offensive chanting, and not by just five people either.

Why? Because they don't take **** off police and stewards, and the media don't go on a hysterical witch-hunt every time a sick joke is made in the form of song. Just as they wouldn't when a sick joke is made between two work colleagues, friends or brothers to wind the other one up.

And the other fans then give as good as they get.

Maybe it's the case that true liberals, in their permitting and open nature, take the view that people can do what they want with their lives and that includes terrace shenanigans like the above.
