I tell what is impressive, Man United averaging 72,000, when the population of Trafford is only 211,000. Amazing init?
I was just looking at this (on the link I posted)... Office For National Statistics (2011 Census) - Population of Gateshead - 200,200.
Like AlRawdah implied - you appear to be confusing Gateshead with the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead which is very different. By the same token Barnsley could claim that their population is 239,300 - but that is the Barnsley Metropolitan Borough and not the town of Barnsley itself which is 91,000. Before Hull City AFC reached the Premier League for the first time there were some who claimed that Wakefield (not Hull) was actually the biggest city never to have had a top flight football team. They were, of course, referring to Wakefield Metropolitan Borough with a population of 325,827 rather than the true 77,000 of Wakefield itself. I also recall Leeds claiming a population in excess of 1 million. Again, they were referring to a mythical 'Greater Leeds' and clearly if they stretched the boundary enough there would indeed be over 1 million people - although it would probably need to include the well known Leeds 'suburbs' of Sheffield and Manchester.
just realised what a record llorente had at juventus.. how the **** did swansea get him? and he's got an insane pl record.. he's actually my fav player this season, just love how he plays, and he gets goals every week.. he's gonna destroy us from set peices/crosses.. esp with the way we zonal mark... silvas biggest weakness he's one of the best headers in europe.. if we zonal mark again.. he will destroy us
I've just glanced through the gist of this discussion and agree there are many more available to Newcastle, than there is Hull, but that's population count, rather than allegiance. Those stats are misleading, as often stats are. It is a common misconception that south of the Tyne (excluding Sunderland) is predominantly Sunderland supporting. Gateshead is far from a 50/50 split; Shields, Chester, Washington and Durham also have far more B&W support than might be imagined.
My mum was born in South Shields and her family all say they're Geordies - not one of them claim to be Mackems
He had an insanely slow start to his Juve career under Conte but when it finally kicked in he did indeed do very well.
Before Kevin Keegan time South shields was mostly Sunderland supports but I'll say it's 50/50 now. It's the same in Durham and Washington to. Gateshead and Chester le street has always been black and white.
Plastic geordies you mean. You called sand dancers end of. South shields was Sunderland and North shields was Newcastle. How Mr Keegan changed all that
Back in the early 1970s when any nicked at football was in court the following Monday after Sunderland games there were more in the HDM reports from Chester Le Street than Sunderland. Plenty from Durham as well.
