QUOTE QPR finally set to offload Brazil goalkeeper to Benfica By talkSPORT (@talkSPORT) | Monday, August 18, 2014 Julio Cesar is in Portugal ahead of a season-long loan move from QPR to Benfica. The Brazil goalkeeper is surplus to requirements at Loftus Road, and manager Harry Redknapp is keen to offload the 34-year-old, who is currently earning £100,000-a-week at the west London club. Redknapp, who stuck with former England stopper Robert Green in his side’s Premier League opener on Saturday, said: "Benfica are supposed to want him. Cesar is supposed to be over there. I hope he’s there anyway." Cesar joined QPR in August 2012 and spent last season on loan at Toronto FC, before playing in all seven of Brazil’s World Cup matches this summer.UNQUOTE Good to see Harry keeping such firm control over his players...
Loan? Thought they had mutually ripped up his contract? Does this mean we'll still be paying some of his wages?
The games to wages ratio is probably a bit skewed by the fact the WE dropped him and WE froze him out. Why? Because he wouldn't take a wage cut. Contractually, he did nothing wrong and was willing to play for us at all times. A contract is one that both parties are meant to have their own interests protected. Now the fault was obviously the wild assumption that we would cement our place in the Premiership. Julio Cesar earnt us more points through saves than he gave away through lacklustre performances, mercenary indifference or two-fingers to the crowd just don't care not trying so we can't put that squarely on him (and not more than anyone else who survived to play in the Championship). We also cut his loan to Toronto short and were even rumoured to want him back. Now, if that's true, that is absolute madness - we have a world cup semi finalist who we wouldn't even put on the bench in the Championship and we then want him to come back into the fold. I even think he probably would do it and I, for one, wouldn't blame him if he wasn't 100% motivated at that point because we've shown no commitment to him because WE screwed up the contracts. I think the whole episode has been thoroughly embarrassing to the club, to the fans and to the player but it was the club's doing. Good luck to him - we don't deserve him. Technically, a mercenary is anyone who who gives themselves to the highest bidder irrespective of allegiance - I think that would apply to anyone not playing for their boyhood clubs, which in our case, isn't many because we don't exactly bring through the loyal youth team do we? I doubt, when we got relegated, those without clauses reducing their wages were queuing outside the boss' office waiting to have their take-home slashed.
Good news. Just one more player left who I would like to see leave - SWP. Incidentally, I noticed Harry did the exact same thing that we did a couple of years ago - play Ephraim in every pre-season game - then drop him for the league games. Also, I don't think we need a 3rd keeper - and to be honest I don't think it would be a good idea anyway. Our 3rd choice can be Lumley - he looks decent enough to be 3rd choice.
Not that I think he's the best person for the position, but I think the right wing back position suits him. Hear me out... he actually defends quite well, marks quite well and keeps position quite well, more than adequately for that position. He also pushes forward better than Danny Simpson. I know SWP isn't the greatest at pushing forward but he at least makes forward passes and through balls on occasion. Simpson moves forward, finds an opposing player, turns around and passes it to a defender.
To be fair to Simpson, last year when he did move forward and look up there was often nobody to pass to!
Each to their own Matt, I think he should get motivated when earning over half a million dollars a month to do anything we tell him!! I'd loan him to a Bangkok whore house if it was up to me. Then again he couldn't even catch an STD. Glad he's going, if anyone thinks that I'm fence sitting on this.
Yep, no worries Rhino. I do think that we need to draw a line though - if you're out then get out (even with a pay off). If you're not going to get picked then release them. We need to be looking forward rather than having reminders of the past (even if the said players divide opinion).
On David Mac twitter that it's a done deal - Cesar is off! Think the whole saga has been badly handled by both parties, and will be happy to see the end of it.
I am glad to see the back of Cesar. We need to make sure we don't sign similar contracts again with any player.
If we need a replacement keeper - and we probably do - our former player of the year has been 'released' by Leeds and is presently available I believe; apparently he was their second highest paid player at £10k pw, the one and only Paddy Kenny
Well, that was nice of him. Thanks for cancelling the contract now but surely, if you really wanted a move, you could have done that a year ago.
JULIO CESAR LEAVES QPR BY MUTUAL CONSENT Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar has left QPR by mutual consent with immediate effect ... QPR have agreed to release goalkeeper Julio Cesar, with the player set to sign for Portuguese side Benfica. The Brazilian, who was contracted until June 2016, has left Loftus Road by mutual consent with immediate effect. The 34 year-old joined QPR on a free transfer in August 2012, going on to make 27 starts in all competitions. The club would like to thank Julio for his services to QPR and wish him all the best for the future. http://www.qpr.co.uk/news/article/190814-julio-cesar-leaves-qpr-by-mutual-consent-1832533.aspx
Reading in between the lines we paid him a lump sum. Like many others, I don't get the animosity towards him. Good luck Julio, it was fun having a QPR player playing for Brazil in the World Cup, and none of those seven were your fault. My personal best memory will be his outstanding performance when we held City 0-0 at home.
A couple of his saves on here Stan. http://livefootballvideo.com/highli...league/queens-park-rangers-vs-manchester-city
