The International setup hasn't really got anything to do with why I favour a German really. More to do with their attitude and a soft spot from previous players such as Babbel and Hamman, nothing logical. <ok>

Don't mate I'm still having nightmares about Voronin i had hoped to erase him from my memory all together. I take your point about the German national team but i'm not sure i totally agree i mean sure they were hyped by the English press but they were always going to be as they needed an excuse as to why we got tore to pieces by them so why not make them out to be the best team in the world. But i do think they were a decent enough side and they are very young for national team and had they met any one other than Spain in the tournament i think they would have been in with a good chance of winning it, and lets face it its no shame to be made to look like boys by the Spain team.

But on to Mertesacker every time i've seen him play he's looked decent enough he's played in a good few international tournaments for a guy of about 25 and although it is as you say different from club football he's also got a decent number of Champions league games in for Werder Bremen as well. He always looks a good solid player he's decent in the air and on the floor which may be surprising especially considering his height he's about 6'6 i think, and i feel he would be a good experienced and possibly cheaper option than some of the other center backs we've been linked with who's prime selling point seems to be that they are English. Also i think its unfair to base judgment on a player simply because he's played in the Bundesliga as although players like Voronin have good records in Germany and have been poor over here there's quite a few who have been successful as well Ballack, Hamman, Marcus Babel(before he got sick) even dodgy knees Owen Hargreaves was OK until he became permanently injured. In the end though we've not even been linked with Mertesacker so it's unlikely we'll sign him anyway i was just offering him as a suggestion.
