Redruth speaking as an outsider I find you to be one of the most sincere posters on this forum and i would ask you to sleep on this overnight! I respect your views and I don't want you to leave over this
Not often I agree with jwm but I entirely agree with this post. It was a subject that, for obvious reasons, was very close to your heart and your feelings are perfectly understandable but the broad sweep you made would make a lot of people who had different opinions very angry and some of the statements made on the thread were verging on the illegal. In view of the problems over similar posts on twitter I don't think Dave had any choice but to close the thread. I have a close relative who has converted to Islam and I wouldn't like to think that you were including him in the broad sweep or the many MP's, members of the Lords, members of the Judiciary, entertainers or business leaders such as James Cann who are also Muslims. We are usually of the same opinion on most issues and I would hate to lose a good supporting Ally on this forum.
Redruth, here are the options!
1) You remain on this forum, continue posting, we all know and understand your opinions and we respect them!
2) You can leave this forum, in which case I will travel down the M5 and then the A38, I will find you, kiss you on the lips then make love to you!

Dave was IMHO right to lock this thread, but not for the reason he has given. If posters descend to personal abuse they should be asked to refrain or be banned, as per the forum rules. The real point is that if everyone who feels strongly and has strong opinions about one or other of the infinite number of fundamentally important non-football issues in life starts a thread, the raison d'etre of this forum will be lost. There really is no more reason to start a thread on here about the events of today than a thread on any of a vast number of issues each just as important as this one to all of us and each capable of giving rise to the same sorts of strong feelings and violent divergence of view. It does not in any way diminish the importance to all of us of these issues to say that this is not the place to debate them. Redruth says that, that being so, he will leave the forum. For my part, if it turns out that this IS the place to debate them, then redruth may stay but I shall certainly go.
In my opinion, and it is just an opinion, ALL religious fundamentalists no matter their creed or colour are among the worst examples of humankind in the 21st century.
It's a backward, outdated way of thinking and all it does is force others into positions where polarised opinions cause division - as evidenced even here on our usually friendly(ish) football discussion forum.
I hope we can all agree that an attack like today's is both cowardly and evil. Those behind it are delusional both in their inhumanely extreme views and any belief that it would cause any lasting damage to our society or way of life in this country.
I can assure you that moderate, or rather "normal" Muslims will be horrified by today.
It's only the bitter and demented ones that would take anything positive from it.

Robbie,Whilst I understand the point that you make surely the on/off switch argument comes into play here.There are regularly OT threads that don't interest me.What I do then is to not bother to contribute.It doesn't bother me if others want to though.

As this is primarily a football forum, none of us three moderators are entirely sure on how best to proceed with the thread in question, so we're seeking advice from above. As such I wouldn't expect us to make a decision on whether the thread is reopened, left closed, or completely deleted right away. Apologies for that, but we're working as fast as we can.
However, I've tried to do some digging into the legality of some of the posts that appeared on the closed thread. From what I can make out, under Section 127 of the Communications Act of 2003, some of those comments could open the members responsible, and possibly the forum, to prosecution. (Incidentally, if Rob or anyone else with a legal background would like to help clarify, that'd be appreciated, it's not normally something I'd want to be reading into). From what I've read, this law has been used to prosecute people making similar comments over twitter, and other forms of social media.
As such, I'll shortly be deleting/editing several comments over there, damage limitation if you will. I'm going to over rather than under-react, so there may be some posts that would probably be ok that may be deleted/edited temporarily, and restored once we've had a chance to talk it over more thoroughly.

Shares my way of thinking. There are other places where other issues can be discussed and do not need to be aired on here, more so when the content becomes politically or racially sensitive. What is sad however is that the moderators at all levels have to take possible legal implications in to consideration due to the fear of reprisal. Free speech is dead in the UK and even more dead for certain topics, and we all know which one's I am referring to.
I have my political and religious views, tolerances and intolerance's but choose to keep them to myself because no matter what my view point is, it is going to piss off someone that is reading with an opposing one.
I would separate what I regard as banter from that.JWM and myself had a fair bit over Thatcher but I think that it stayed within bounds and I don't think that we actually fell out over it.On that topic we were probably about as far apart as you could get.Redruth was quite clearly genuinely upset by the events of yesterday,although his wasn't the most vituperative online.My own view is that people are being a bit squeamish.I've not seen anything online that goes remotely close to interesting the CPS even on those other sites.No it's not strictly football related but people are entitled to their opinions.My own hunch is those upset by Redruth's post/s are the younger members who have grown up in a more PC environment,just an observation,not a criticism BTW,

Very much agreed. Thought better of people on here. I'm pleased it was closed, as I'd end up saying something/reading something I couldn't and wouldn't want to come back from.
Oblivious is one way of looking at it.The other way is refusing to be cowed by the establishment.I bet that sort of thing was being said in the 1930's when certain elements were drawing attention to the dangers of Nazi Germany.If we had the current legislation in force back then you would have been scared of getting dragged before the beak for being beastly to Herr Hitler.
