Yup assess Torres, its what managers get paid to do. Maybe he won't ever be back to his best but its mindless to risk 53.3 mill without looking at what you've got first. As for Cavani being 'world class' - so was Torres before he joined us.

Yeah but Cavani isn't shot and injury prone.

Asses Torres? FFS, when are people going to realise he will never be as good as he was. Sack the overpaid mess off and bring some real firepower in, Cavani is one of the best in the world. Nothing wrong with having both he and Lukaku playing regularly. We played something like 130 odd games over the past two seasons.

<doh><doh>

No he wasn't. He had been under performing for about 8 months prior to buying him.

In a nutshell, the powers that be, did not look at the bigger picture with Torres and made a very expensive mistake when aquireing his services. 50 mill would have bought just about any striker on the planet at the time, but they chose to buy an out of form recently badly injured player that to be honest just wasn't worth the risk.

While I am in no doubt that signing Cavani would give us the best attack in the league, wouldn't it be so much more satisfying watching Lukaku start for us?

Here we go again, rumours and more rumours.
If it's true, then it confirms my worries about Jose MK 2. The man is addicted to spending. With the apparent departure of JT to Monaco on the cards, it's Central defence and midfield that are our glaring weaknesses. Cahill is not up to it and, even if he stays, JT is past it, and a midfielder with vision is non existent, unless Luiz is now a midfielder.
WTF we would spend over 50 mill on a striker, when we scored more goals last season than ever !!!!!
Cavani is a great striker but 50 mill players have a habit of biting us in the bum.

It would for me. Watching Lukaku just get better and better is going to be great.

I'm still not happy about all this bringing in of the 'worlds greatest players' to get instant success but I suppose Jose has gotta make his mark this year so has to push the boat out to prove himself. We just have to put our faith in him using old and new players and getting the combination right.

It does make you wonder how Mourinho can claim to be a great manager when he just buys the top players. Surely there are many managers who could be successful with the best players. It's not like he is buying players that others wouldn't have thought of, just the really obvious targets.

I'd like to see more of Lukaku as well! Apart from FFP he really does seem to be the "new Drogs" and in Jose's hands, I'd put money on him to become the PL's top scorer next year!

Oh he's a great manager alright. His record shows that.No question.

But he doesn't need to be if he's just going to keep buying the cream. The only issue he'll have next season will be keeping the players on side, which seems to be a weakness anyway.

He won the CL with Porto and inter without buying the best players. In fact at inter they sold their best player and he took them to a treble. Best manager in Europe.

Been watching some of cavanis goals, unreal. Doesn't take extra touches just curls them in from 20 yards! Great in the air, can dribble, young...

If we are going to spend big on anyone he looks a good bet.

He's animal. £50m is too much for anyone but if we were willing to spend it on a declining Torres...

Exactly <ok>

If we can ship Torres off in the other direction and offload Ba too, our striker would be a choice of Cavani or Lukaku with Schurrle as 3rd choice. Tidy.

I have to disagree, Torres was on a big spiral the back end of the 09/10 season and right through the next season. His only decent game was scoring two against us, other than that he was complete cack.

The problem with Roman is he is being advised to buy the complete or in Torres case, formerly complete articles. When moulding a player into world class is the better option.

We signed Shevchenko when a young Torres would have been better, then we signed Torres when Aguero or Suarez would have been better, both going on to prove their worth in the Prem at our rivals.

Cavani is a risk, but he is in form when we are signing him and a good age.

Now you're being disingenuous. Hindsight is always 20-20 and we were all jumping up and down with the prospect of Torres and Shevchenko.

Funny thing is I don't hear anyone mention Cavani before last year. Sign he's just on form and maybe not actually class, not 53.3 mill of class anyway. And what happens when he loses form? Will Jose be forced to stick with a player to justify some higher up whim in the vain hope he will regain it? Or maybe 53.3 ****ing mill is simply wiser spent on two up and coming strikers ala pre 2012 Cavani? Hmmm?

As per above posting, hindsight is wunderbar isn't it?

BTW 53.3 mill would make it one of the most expensive signings ever. For player who nobody was concerned about until last year. 53.3 mill and for sure, Napoli are laughing all the way to the Bank of Italy.

Shevchenko, yes. Torres, no. He was quite clearly in ****e form for a long while before we signed him it was just a **** decision.

Since Cavani joined Napoli in 2010, he's scored 104 goals in 138 games and over 30 goals a season. He is well worth buying for a large sum IF we offload Torres too.

Anyone considered that this night not be Jose's choice?

I think one of the conditions of Jose joining would have been that we go in for a top striker. Ba and Torres are hopeless and there's no way Jose would have pinned his hopes on a 19 year old.

Jose would have wanted Falcao/Lewandowski/Cavani I'm sure.
