    Driving for 3 to 4 hours ?!?!?!
    Not a chance
Anything over 2.5 hours is a train journey (or short flight even!)

    whoops!

i bought n cheapish (£10??) usb speed thing (probably chinese) that i hoped would give the accurate speed according to gps, but it's somewhere inbetween the app on my phone and what the speedo says, so i was a bit disappointed, plus sometimes the two speeds are close together and sometimes they're not, which bugs me..

i'm currently in my second year of having an insurance-related gizmo attached to the car. the current one reports every instance when (and where) i've gone too fast for it. the reported ones are always at least 10% over (sometimes on hills i'm not used to, being a hull-dweller) so it must ignore lower ones, but i haven't worked out whether they've added the plus 2. i'm scoring around 84/100 for speed and 94/100 for braking. unfortunately i'm on 6/100 for night driving and can't do much about it. the previous insurance ignored night driving on road with speeds over 50 and i ended with 57/100. the current ones keep telling me i'm one of their safest drivers.

    i sympathise.

i recently drove down the road i got my first speeding ticket on. that day, maybe 23 years back, bright sun just above the horizon and i'm heading downhill straight into it, dazzled despite sunglasses. speed signs were silhouettes. my speedo (ford escort) black and white, but being dazzled means it's a blank when i look at it. no idea of speed limit, no idea what speed i'm doing, so trying to do what feels reasonable but not fast. get to the village at the bottom and realise i'm not dazzled. turn my head to look for a speed sign and get flashed. turns out the 30 sign was a silhouette too. i had no chance.

later learned the speed camera had been "necklaced" after getting one local too many. and, of course, none of the locals have the remotest idea who did it. cheered me up no end!

the annual police report summarising accidents and details including causes makes interesting reading. it includes two causes relating to speed. one is exceeding the limit, the other is for driving too fast for prevailing conditions. it was some years since i looked at the report, but guess where these two causes came in the top ten of the list of causes.

they weren't in the top ten.

    11th and 12th.

funny how none of the top ten causes got monetized (except maybe phone use). the one they bleat on and on and on about because they can't monetize all the ones above it. and why don't posts with speed cameras on them also have a sign saying what the limit is?

because it's a money making scam.

put the speed signs on the camera posts and i'll reconsider this view. but until that time, they're all money grabbing thieving hypocritical lying bastards.

I've not heard of this gizmo. Is it linked to your insurance then? Guessing it effects the cost of your premium depending how well or badly you've driven the previous year?

here's an amazon link; there are assorted features on some of them. next time i'd consider one that makes a noise if i go over the speed limit, but i suspect many people silence that feature within hours of using it.

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=gps sp...speed,aps,214&ref=nb_sb_ss_mvt-t11-ranker_1_9

it's not related to my insurance. the gadgets that let the insurers monitor my driving were sent by the insurers. unfortunately the last two insurance companies said that if i made mods to my car they couldn't insure the car, so i've had to use non-permanent plug-in gadgets. i could have added cruise control to this car for under £100. i thought it was supposed to be a safety feature and really liked it on the previous car. nope, they wouldn't have it. if i'd gone to a dealer and paid ten times as much, they'd've been fine with it. i wanted to add a bluetooth device to the sound system. would have cost under a tenner. nope. bastards. so i got a gadget that plugs into the lighter, picks up bluetooth from my phone and sends an fm signal the car radio can pick up (also has a usb socket i can play music from or charge my phone with or plug the speed gizmo into). i can also play stuff from websites and send it to the car radio via bluetooth and fm.

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BTP3PQ6Y/?tag=not606-21

the first insurance company gadget is wired in the engine compartment (the instructions didn't suit my car so i had to improvise) and the current one is plugged into the obd socket.

i changed insurance companies both years but i'd suffered due to my previous car being hit by a stolen car and - presumably - driven by an uninsured driver (may his insides rot, may his eyeballs and eardrums explode, and may cancer give him many decades of excruciating agony), who evaded the police. despite the car that hit me having a police car with three witness officers in it, the whole thing was somehow my fault, because the insurance bastards refused to claim on the police insurance and refused to look at the police report. i drove the car until its mot expired, but the insurance people deemed it a write-off. in retrospect i should have let we-buy-any-car.com buy it instead of claiming the write-off money.

so the insurance more or less tripled. i'm expecting the abortion that is rachel reeves to treble the annual road tax just to add to my feelings of resentment and injustice. i hope bad things happen to her, and the rest of the labour party's mentally deficient forward line.

It was more years ago than I care to remember, but my first speeding ticket was for doing mid 30's in a long, straight 30 zone. At the time I was in a long line of cars, and I was simply following the speed of the others, but I was the one they selected to fire the radar gun at, claiming I was going faster than the others.

What made it more irritating was that within a couple of months of me paying the fine, they upped the limit in that stretch to 40mph. Nothing had changed on the road in the meantime.

Back in the early 90's I lived near Exeter. The headline in the local paper was something like "What a difference a year makes". The report was about a recent meeting of the watch commitee. Referencing back to notes taken a year ago, the police were asking for funding for speed cameras to be placed on a notorious stretrch of road. After much howling and screaming, how much, too expensive, they finally relented. A year later they wanted to know where they could site more of these cash generators.

That reminds me of the old joke...... I hope I die peacefully in my sleep like my grandad. Not screaming and terrified like his passengers.
