No problem at all fella - all about opinions and I have been trying to convince people on here for years that he is a better player than he gets credit for. But he certainly isn't a liability this season - has been a massive asset for us.

He has always been susceptible to giving the ball away, look at Leicester's first goal at SOL. He is a genuine leader and for that reason i would keep him but we do need options.

Isn't it amazing that no ****er else is susceptible like this <yikes>

I know that when I play tonight, there's absolutely no chance of me giving the ball away . . . . 'cos I'm not :emoticon-0145-shake

We need to improve and I agree Catts has done his job and it's time to move on the reason we have had so many managers is because of the likes of Catts larsson and o,shea kone Kirchhoff and Kaboul are the type of players we have been missing the last 5 years

Singling out the Leicester first goal where he went for a 50/50 and the ball bounced to Drinkwater randomly though?

Seen far better footballers than Cattermole give the ball away and give goals away as a result. The difference is, with Cattermole everyone remembers when he's to blame for something (prime example where you blame him for Leicester's first goal, where I think, as the ball was 2 yards in the box before Vardy caught it, Mannone was wholly to blame) Wonder if anyone remembers any of the perfectly weighted eye of a needle through passes he's played? I remember them

BTW - I agree he's a player we do need to improve on - but I also wouldn't be disappointed if we started the season with him in central midfield

There is always a spot in a squad for committed players like Catts, someone has to do the dirty work but he has an eye for a pass as well, he literally grabs players by the scuff of the neck as at Norwich. He's a must keep for me even if we do sign 'classier' midfielders in the summer.

I mentioned that goal as it was the most recent, there have been others, plenty others in fact. Can't remember which match it was but Sam took him off at half time cos he was having a stinker and had already gave two goals away through holding onto the ball in front of the back four.

For the record, i'm not saying he has to go, rather we just need that bit of extra quality in the playmaker role. Horses for courses if you like. Cattermole is an integral part of the squad and should remain so, we just need to add to that squad and that's one position i'd like to see improved.

I watch most Sunderland games with fans of other clubs, whether that's on telly or live at a ground. Almost all of them tell me how crap Cattermole is. The most positive comment I've heard is "he's not creative enough to play further forward".
He has character and attitude in abundance and this has dragged us on for the second half of this season, he has been a real leader. But he is not a technically good footballer. He may have played three excellent balls this season but he is a premier league midfield player- that is a basic requirement of his role. There is no one outside of Sunderland fans who rate him and I'm afraid I think a lot of people's appreciation of him is based on sentimentality.
He might run through walls for Sunderland but if we're to move on we need greater ability. His heart and desire mean he's probably worth keeping in the squad, perhaps bringing on to fire the side up when their backs are against wall. But, if this latest survival is to be worth anything, we have to look to the future and, for me, Lee Cattermole is not it.

Agree and I can;t remember who it was against - but he no longer plays the role in there - M'Vila is that player but the three of Catts, Kirchhoff and M'Vila are a pretty good balance - Catts is a destroyer built to break up play and move the ball on and he does that well. The other 2 are fantastic footballers - great passers of the ball and great vision. Pretty good in the tackle too - they complement each other really well. (agree totally with the last paragraph too)

villa? possibly west ham?

He'll be here next season unless someone comes in for him. Obviously.

I can see one of the promoted clubs making a bid, quite possibly the smoggies. Isn't he a Teesside lad?

Given the right bid from another PL club I think he could be gone this summer.

thing is tho even tho he's technically a better player and can score goals, i'd still rather have a grafter like catts in the team over a lazy ****e like Wijnaldum.
the chemistry of the team needs to be right, we can't have XI flair players on the pitch or we'd get ruined worse than villa have been this year. even last seasons champions struggled cos their players didn't give a **** and had no one to kick them up the arse.

We outplayed west ham twice this season and were never behind at Villa (and Sam wasn;t here when we played Villa first time or West Ham first time)
maybe last year then - yes. it was. when villa scored 4. didn't wham come back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 this year?
all these seasons of struggle are starting to blend together

This is just it - what's the right bid? For an English, experienced central midfielder I'd want a minimum of £10m - he's easily as good as Shelvey (£12m same sort of position) and will give 100% in every game not just the ones where he can be arsed. Someone asked how much is he worth a little while ago and our fans were saying £5m - no way - he's worth far more than that by today's standards and shows why others under-rate him as we appear to do that ourselves. He is a big part of SAFC and I would personally like to see him end his career here in some form. Hope we don;t sell him

Aye West Ham did at our place - when Lens was sent off for 2 softish yellows but Noble could do what he wanted and not pick up a second yellow! Cattermole had nothing to do with the goals for West Ham though and Borini missed a sitter! Was still before Allardyce - was Advocaat's last game

His value will largely depend on how long he's got left on his contract.

Agreed, but it is possible to be a grafter and be a good footballer. Take Didier Deschamps and Claude Makelele for example.

but none of this is about who catts is playing under. don't know why you keep bringing that up, unless you think it's cos he's been asked to play different roles under different managers?
i remember borini was at fault for one of those wham goals too, giving the ball away on the touch line.
it happens, to every player at some point, whether immediately after or an indirect result of a decision they got wrong. it'll happen more when you're a central player like catts i'm sure.

No mate but the point was made about Allardyce taking him off at half time in a game (welder said that) which is why I made that point (no biggie!)
