There's a huge difference mate. It's a line I've read on here bare times, plus it's Yaya Toure, he's one of the easiest opponents to play against if he's not at 100%, he's ****ing gash unless he gets his birthday cake.
Yeah but this was asked after his best season over here - not after the last couple where he's been gash - was after Toure had played very well for them. And for a player asked who his toughest opponents have been to think of Lampard, Scholes then Cattermole is pretty cool thing for him to say from our perspective - he's placed him as one of his three toughest opponents with 2 of the greatest English Centre Mids ever to have played the game!
I thought this was a new thread until I read about Bruce selling him I can't believe we've been discussing selling him for 5 years now! I still think he'll go even though he's just signed a new contract.
He might have been, it must have been a question very similar to it judging from the response. You're nitpicking for no good reason. Like you say it's not the biggest compliment in the world coming from a dozy twonk like Yaya. Nobody is claiming it's evidence that Catts is a world class midfielder.
That's fair enough, I'm not diminishing him acknowledging Cattermole, just that he never mentions 'toughest ever'. Read the interview, I did, that's how I know.
I'm just saying the quote that gets bandied around on here, it never happened. You wanna shut me down just because I oppose a fabricated quote? I'm not nit picking at all, the quote doesn't exist, he merely mentioned him as strong and some of you have taken that as 'greatest ever opponent' ffs. It's like Mayweather saying Hatton was a decent boxer then somebody quoting him as saying he was his toughest ever opponent.
Nobody said anything about greatest ever, the quote was about toughness and that's the context in which we relate it to Catts. It'd be like Mayweather saying Hatton was a particularly tough opponent and Hatton's supporters taking it to mean one of the toughest he'd faced.
Great post, I think. Not quite sure about the British use of "gash and canny" though. Cattermole absolutely refused to be relegated. Great run in. Won me over with that.
If we sign M'Vila I don't think we need 3 DMs on the pitch, surely it was out of necessity last season. He's a big wage to sit on the bench. He'll be third choice if M'Vila signs. simple economics, too big a wage to sit on the bench, not enough ability to start games. If we can get close to 10m then sell.
I don't think my opinion of him underrates him. He's a lower table premiership midfield player who is of limited technical ability for the level he's playing at. He makes up for his deficiencies with work-rate, endeavour, and attitude. This is why almost every manager we've had since Bruce has tried to drop him, but they've found he works harder than anyone else, so he gets back into a struggling side that needs a kick up the backside. Some fans appreciate his work-rate and love him for that. As for the Yaya Toure quote, all he said was Cattermole was "very strong". That can be interpreted in a number of ways.
I agree about the "red mist" but I believe he's come through his passionate uncontrolled phase of his combative style. His recent games show a new maturity and his on-field body language is no longer such a target for referees ( I am an ex-referee and any on-field tensions are easy to spot). His continual passion support and encouragement is vital for the team spirit and younger players - we've gone through the hard times I believe he is a passionate polished jewel for the team - cannot buy this
Wandy this thread is nearly 5 years old. I pulled it as he is still there. Same should he stay debate. Also to see if anyone had changed their view on him. As there wasnt many at that time wanted to keep him.
