It would appear the big lad thought he was bigger than the club and thought he could get the club to up his wages even though he got a new contract in October. So he wanted to stay but got greedy, as strange as it sounds I'm glad the club stuck to their guns on the wage cap, this is what got us in the **** the last time!!!!

I thi nk it was the same with Bent SirBR. Rooney set the trend and I think Bent thought he was here to stay, asked for more and was not given it. Mind he was never right from the moment we paid more for Gyan.

The thin I always find amusing is, you cant blame him for taking the money because footballers have such a short creer, they have to make it whem they can. FFS Bent was on about 40k a week with us, no idea what Carroll was on with you but short carer or not.

Great article Syd!

To carry on from your point - Benk £40k/week, Carroll £30k/week. The average UK person earns about £24k a year i think according to recent stats. Even if you start work at 17 and retire at 65 you will only get 48 paying years at that average (not allowing for inflation). This means Bent & Carroll earn more in one year than the working man does in his lifetime. Even if they only get to play and earn at that level for five years they are absolutely minted. The short career argument for the top pro's is a crock. How much money does any one person need? How about a bit of loyalty and honouring of contracts?

spot on. Carroll was born and bred in Newcastle so he knows exactly what the majority of people who supported him earn. Bent is from a normal working class family and also knows. TBF neither have used the short career argument but its rubbish. Even those from the top level who have their career cut short through injury are well insured. Someone mentioned the forces, tell a poor bugger who comes home minus a leg or two, an arm or two about short careers.

If Carol's texts/twitters are to be believed he had not been courted for several weeks by Liverpool, this may be true as Daglish has only recently been appointed and was not aware that Torres had been 'tapped-up' for a while by Chelsea and when he realised Torres was on the move needed to find a replacement quickly . When your fat man saw how much wonga he could get his grubby paws on, told Carol, your off son and you will get a pay rise, p.s. you have to put in a transfer request.

Whereas it is now generally accepted that Bent had been tapped up for several weeks before his departure and I reckon Bruce/Quinn did not know and thought they had sorted matters with Bent in the 2010 close season until mid 2011. I think if they had known they would have been lining up a replacement as well as the couple of midfielders we were after and got.

So I reckon Bent is a lying underhand *****, whereas Carol when showed the exit and told to move on, for more cash merely did so, probably within 24/48 hours.

The moral of this, it is only the fans that really love the team, players are in it for the money and will move if they/owners are greedy. Great 'game' our football is it not.

So I guess what we can learn from Bent, Carroll and the like is that it is naive of us to expect loyalty from the players when mega-money is available to them. The clubs we love stay constant and our worthy of support & affection, but players, managers and owners are just mercenary cogs in the wheel who are out for what they can get and are not worth getting emotional about. Easier said than done not to care what they do though!

When Bent left us someone put it exactly how it is.

Its like when the girl you love dumps you, you hate her and anyone who says nice things about her. The thought of seeing her in love with someone else is unbearable. Then a new girl comes along, you fall in love all over again and the last girl is a distant memory.
