"The origin of Cardiff City’s nickname, ‘The Bluebirds’ is truly fascinating. It had started being used, along with ‘The Cardiffians’, ‘The City’ and ‘The Citizens’, after the club changed from their first colours of chocolate and amber to royal blue and white, sometime around 1910.

There is a connection with a classic children’s play, called The Blue Bird, written by the Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlinck in 1909. The bird, a symbol of happiness, is pursued by children who want to imprison it in a cage and the play’s theme urges us not to try to hoard happiness for ourselves.

This play had come to the New Theatre in Cardiff in late October 1911. It received good reviews during its six-night run and a week after the production had left town, Maeterlinck was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for his symbolist plays including The Blue Bird and Pelleas and Mesilande. The publicity surrounding the play’s arrival in the Welsh capital and then Maeterlinck’s honour led to an unknown Cardiff City supporter deciding to call the team, resplendent in their blue strip, ‘The Blue Birds’. Gradually, it emerged as the favoured nickname before being adopted officially by the club.

At the time Cardiff City appeared in their first FA Cup final in 1925 and took the FA Cup out of England for the first and only time in 1927 the club sported the coat of arms of the city as their emblem. These arms were granted on 26 August 1906. The shield of the arms bears a red dragon, the national symbol of Wales. The dragon symbol has been in practically continuous use since the Romans brought it to Britain. When Rome withdrew her troops the dragon remained as the symbol of authority and unity among the Romanized Britons and became their standard in the wars against the invading Angles and Saxons. It was from this emblem the war-leader would take the name Pendragon, and would particularly be associated with the semi-mythical King Arthur. To this day the red dragon remains the national emblem of the remnant of the ancient British people, the Welsh, and as such appears in the heraldry of many Welsh authorities.

The dragon upholds a standard upon which is emblazoned the bearing of three silver chevrons upon a red background They are attributed to Iestin ap Gwrgan, the last prince of Glamorgan, who lived in Cardiff Castle about 1030-1080.

Our dragon plants the staff of the standard upon a green mount whereon he stands, and from which springs a leek. The origin of the leek, the floral emblem of Wales, is the battle of Poictiers where, if we may quote Fluellen (Shakespeare’s poor attempt at writing Llewellyn) from Shakespeare’s Henry V, “the Welshmen did good service in a garden where leeks grow, wearing leeks in their Monmouth caps.”

The supporting Welsh goat represents the ancient mountains of Glamorgan. The hippocamp or sea-horse , represents the Severn Sea and the carrying trade of the port. The motto beneath the shield reads ‘Y ddraig goch ddyry gychwyn’, meaning of course “The red dragon will lead the way”

The crest consists of a Tudor rose and three ostrich feathers, issuing out of a mural crown. The ostrich feathers, famous as the badge of the Heir Apparent, are from the Princes of Wales, and their use was specially authorized by Royal Warrant. The Tudor rose and the mural crown are reminiscent of the past history of the City. The crest is supported by a tilting helmet of ancient form. The motto for the crest reads ‘ Deffro mae’n ddydd’, meaning “Awake, it is day”.

Cardiff City has had a variety of other badges through the years with the bluebird always prominently illustrating the club’s past and present image. At times as a single-minded theme, but always in full flight. Set in a circle and accompanied by their nickname, used during the 1958/59 season, depicted on a quartered shield and again shown in a circle, both from the late 1960’s, and from the 1980s onwards, accompanied by the Welsh red dragon and ‘St Peter’s leek’, the daffodil, the other national flower. Until 2003, when the club felt it needed a modernized design. England fans have red and white for St George, the Scots blue and white for St Andrew and the Irish have green and white for St Patrick. Cardiff City’s new crest contains the black and gold flag of St David and the Bluebird. Sacrosanct."

and so our history will continue with the times of change new jersey <cheers>

Thank you for that Rubber Ball, very interesting and informative. Reasons I "f****D' to the USA :-
My wife is from New York. Today it was sunny 27C, tomorrow 29C Friday 32C sunny Sat 31C sunny, cooled down now, we had about 9 days over 40C, a bit too hot. How was the weather in Cardiff today and over the summer? I hear someone was hit by lightning? Hope they are ok. I filled up my car with petrol on Sunday $3 51 a US gallon which is 3.785 litres. To have filled up in Port Talbot my home town today it would have cost me $8.76 per gallon (I checked prices on line 1 39 a litre, don't have a pound sign on my computer). When I bought my car it was 13 250 in pounds, the same car in the UK was going for 20 000 + at the time. I had it tested by the state on Monday (MOT) it was free. My registration (tax disc for 2 years) $76 50 about 45 quid. My wife is watching tv, no license fee. My total wage deductions after state and federal taxes including Medicare and social security amount to 16.66% of my wages. I pay no taxes on food and clothes all other taxes are around 6%. Whats VAT there now, 20%? I can buy a 12 pack of Newcastle Brown 40% cheaper here after it has been shipped 3500 miles than you can in Newcastle. I can buy a 1.75 litre bottle of Barcardi for the same price you can buy a litre on a P+O cross channel ferry, that made me laugh, I checked on line today. Duty free? my arse. I am 15 minutes drive to a golden sandy beach that is 130 miles long, some built up and some as desolate as a desert island and with beautiful nature reserves. Found a cricket ball washed up whilst beach combing, must have come from the Caribbean. In January after a 2 hour drive I go downhill skiing. The most popular name for new baby boys in the USA is not Mohamed! I have health insurance, dental, medical and optical, costs me nothing through work. Even the dog has medical insurance, well we do pay for that.
Now the big question is, why haven't more of you, like me f****D off too?

you guys are blinded by money...one thing america hasnt got is a health service,i`d call it more a prescription service for starters.......i must say i like the loophole in the medical weed laws but that wont last long with the ultra christian sects that rule politics.

other than that happiness isnt payed for with material things....its more simple than that

House prices here are high as I'm commuter distances to NY and Philly about 60 miles each way, I work 6 miles away but compared to the UK they are still cheap. For a 2 bed flat in the Marina in Swansea you get a 4/5 bed house2 1/2 bathroom about 4000 sq foot. Head a bit further south to Maryland or Delaware or even Virginia and I'm considering doing that, you can get a HUGE place for 200 000 quid on a"development" estate with golf club, swimming pool, club house, lawns mowed the lot, a mansion 5000 sq foot house. Switzerland is expensive Swamp. Greece is cheap Chico and great weather like here, about the same latitude. Anyway, good luck Cardiff this weekend, would love to see you in the Premiership next year and great Swansea Cardiff games again. My Mother was born in Cardiff as was my brother, sister, brothers son in law, all Cardiff supporters, no ambition see. lol

Maybe because we arent all obsessed with wealth and are happy to pay for a NHS service.

In a country where you can enjoy a sport the rest of the world play live and not American Cr@p.

If I wanted to leave the UK for the sun id rather go to Spain and not the USA.

Dislike Americans?, so do the Taliban and they dislike you too and in what 80-100 maybe 150 years time when the muslims rule in the UK( look at the birth statistics) and get voted in and your grandchildren are under Shiria law, don't come crawling for help again to the USA. Well you wont as you will be dead as will I, but your Grandchildren or Great children will. Do you think we won WWI or WW2 on our own, do you think we held off the cold war through the 50's and 80's on our own, threatening Russia? You can bless your damn hearts that the USA was behind us or you'd be speaking German or Russian now. Yep the USA has faults like the UK doesn't, but god help the world needs the USA, make no bones about that. I am a big advocate of the USA and the UK saying ok we are not sending troops, aid, anywhere for the next ten years, we are staying home, see how you get on. Then they will see how much they need the UK and the USA. Legal weed? well that explains your lucid talk about Cardiff City History and the crap that came after. Stay refreshed my friend.

I've lived in the U.S (San Francisco) and Australia (Sydney). Both great places in their own way but I never felt unsafe in Australia - anywhere. The same couldn't be said of the U.S where you had to be really careful in the big cities. No doubt they would say the same about ours.

Also, there are many in the U.S who have a bizarre outlook on life - yes, worse than here. Many were absolutely horrified at Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction at the Superbowl but couldn't give a toss about the Texas anti-abortion laws that were being pushed by the Bible-bashing Rednecks down there. Even after the recent cinema massacre in Colorado, hardly anyone dares question the preposterous right to bear arms contained in the Constitution which was written over 200 years ago. (In fact the document describes a 'well-armed militia' and the meaning has been perverted over the years by governments and courts). Now we have a situation were guns are absolutely everywhere and nobody (understandably) wants to give them up because all the crims have them. 900 murders a month from guns in the U.S is a shocking statistical fact.

On the other hand, Americans can be the most generous people you'd ever care to meet. Yes, I know, it's a sweeping generalisation, and not everyone is the same.

Every country I've lived in has had it's fair share of beautiful countryside, awesome sites to visit and welcoming people (by and large). To say one is "better" than another is wrong. Each have strengths and weaknesses. I have an Aussie passport but choose to live here.

    Live Prem football, see. :)

I knew the silver surfers on the Jacks site were old but KJ must be ancient.

Deported to Australia , locked up in Alcatraz. If things couldnt get worse hes sent back to Swansea.

When did we stop deporting our cons? Hasnt Alcatraz been a tourist attraction for decades.???
