We have been drawn away to mighty Carlisle United in the 3rd round. Last time we played them there was in the old 1st division in 1974/75 season where we suffered a humiliating 1-0 defeat (always for Spurs) However that I suspect won't happen this time. BTW what happened to the name Football League Cup? Commercialism sigh!
I really hope we take this competition seriously...I hate it being used as a reserve game like it doesn't matter. A cup is a cup and if other clubs think it is beneath them then **** em...we don't have to be so ignorant.
Your wish is my command Not really sure what to say about Carlisle, I know nothing about them apart from that they beat Brentford in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final a couple of seasons ago. Seems like a good draw, although away ties are always tricky.
AVB said he wants to win cups this season. Lets see if he backs that with decent line ups. Mousers go back to West Brom.
We've got a lot of backup and youngsters that are going to struggle to get chances so I don't see what's wrong with setting this competition aside for them.
I remember when we lost 1-4 to the gooners a couple of years ago...we pretty much played a team made up of deadwood like Keane, Bentley and players who were then sent out on loan. Last year we played a piss poor team v stoke. I have no problem rotating the team but I do have a problem not taking a competition seriously. We have only won 2 trophies in the past 21 years (both of them this trophy)... there are only 4 possible trophies to win if you are in Europe, we have rarely if ever challenged for the league in the past 40 years so realistically there are 3 trophies that we can win and last year we pissed up the carling cup and the Europa league by playing next to no regulars. We should take them all seriously.
I don't see the point in giving 5-6 young/fringe players a chance in these cups, as 99% of the time they play crap as a team and get owned and bossed about by league one teams. if we play at least 7-8 1st team players and rest a couple of key players and use players like Cauker/Kane/Townsend then that be ideal.
Tough draw, but we should win - I went up to Carlisle when we played them in the FA Cup about 1971/2 - absolutely classic game - we won 3-2 IIRC - we certainly won, cos I remember being well happy about the game and result.
I remember the Carlisle v Spurs cuptie too.Blooming long train trip.Didn't Jimmy Neighbour score the winner? Then the blooming long journey back to Cheshunt. I do remember seeing Gilly and Mullery holding up the bar in the train carriage! I used to hate that.Long journey...straight to the ground.wait an hour for the start.straight back to the train.back home.never even saw Carlisle town.....if anything was to be seen! For some reason I have a recollection of going to Blackpool by train one year.Getting off the train,I found myself walking with Jimmy Greaves and Greavesy looking about him asking where the Spurs fans were. I didn't say anything.I never wore colours and more often went on trips with Spurs on my own. My furthest trip was to Setubal in Portugal.Losing 2-0,Chivers hit a free kick past their goalie into the net to score the away goal we needed.I've never heard a crowd go so quiet, even at Stamford Bridge!!!! The crowd consisted of a lot of army, navy Portugese cadets.....and they were nice enough to steal the Spurs fans seats!!!!But I did see Lisbon.Very nice!
