Wanting to give Gunn a chance doesn't mean I think Krul has become a poor keeper overnight. Gunn is an excellent keeper with experience in out squad earning himself England call ups . It's not like we are resorting to chuck youth team keepers in he was signed to compete for the Jersey . Maybe Watford is a bit premature taking into account our opening fixtures but we are conceding 2.75 goals per game so far and scoring 0.25 goals per game so obviously the keeper and striker will be judged on those metrics.
Indeed, but that is exactly why we can't afford Krul's recurring lack of judgement and haphazard execution. If the opposition are pressing high and you gift them possession when your own midfield are already advancing, you are in trouble (as witness, for example, Brandon Williams's mis-control leading up to Leicester's first goal). That's also, incidentally, why having a dedicated DM is so critical IMO. Unexpected possession loss is a lot worse than expected possession loss, and a DM is primed to anticipate the unexpected. (For which reason also, the suggestion that the DM role can be split between a midfield three strikes me, quite frankly, as ludicrous.) Interestingly, Arteta has been facing the same goalkeeper problem with Bernd Leno, which is a large part of why Arsenal have brought Ramsdale in -- and played him yesterday!
Gunn will get his chance in the cup v Liverpool which will allow a like for Iike comparison. The Watford game is too important for experimentations with player changes. I agree with starting Rashica and Cantwell behind Pukki with Sargent, Tzolis and Dowell as impact sub options with Normann replacing Rupp in midfield. The cup game is the time to give Kabak his debut beside Hanley or Gibson and give starts to Tzolis, Sargent, Gilmour and Dowell as well.
