That outer steelwork will be as light as possible. It's not structural so doesn't need to be strong. Plus the plane wings are designed to be strong as possible and it was prob going 500mph ffs
They were flying at just about 1000 ft Edward. A plane can easily be doing up to 500mph at that level without creating too big a vaccum.
At those heights a plane can be still managed at 410 knots (470mph) or 510 knots (590mph)
