Selling our better players for huge amounts isnt an option in my opinion, we could have money to spend on replacements but where do you find players of similar quality without being ripped off, and without CL its even harder to attract top players unless you pay mansouresque wages. We have to keep our best players and add to them whether they like it or not, they signed a contract at Spurs and should respect it.
any player that wants to leave..i wil turn against him...if he is so good he...whoever he may be...should have upped their performance and helped us to get to where they think they should be. plus we did what we could...FIFA screwed us over...simple really or we would be on a totally diffrent vibe.
Cockerel...footballers are not cut from the kind of cloth yourself,me and most other Spurs fans are. im sad to say.
Err...thats what kept Modric here. Levy quite clearly done him and his agent up like a kipper...no early release clause. He still has 4yrs, he signed for 6 don't forget. There may be a relase clause further into it, we'll have to see. A lot could hinge on Ade staying, Bale will stay if he does. Everyone seems to think losing Modric would be a disaster, not so sure about that myself. Great player, yes he plays great passes in builds ups to goals, but when that isn't working, when did he last a take a game by the scruff and win it against a top side? tends to disappear in those ones, lots of endeavour, but just can't force it when its really needed. Our MF needs one of them types.
Against United, or any other team that pack their MF, he goes missing. Compare him to someone like Silva and the difference is quite big. It's not enormous - Modric is a great player but his head drops too easily for me. You look at City's MF - Silva and Toure (Toure is an absolute tank who chips in with goals when it matters), Nasri - good player, City are too good for him though. That's just off the top of my head. The fact they can leave star players like Johnson on the bench speaks volumes. I'd have Johnson in my team any day of the week - so would a lot of other PL teams.
I think losing Modders last summer would have been a disaster. But now, Levy has shown he won't be bullied. Its more the statement it sent out than losing the player that i had a problem with. I think we could cope with losing Modders as long as we bring in some guys BEFORE he leaves to show the other players we still mean business and we aren't just taking the profit.
The Guardian article is the first post I have noticed accepting that Bale & Modric may not be moving and giving some credit to Spurs as a club determined to retain and improve it's squad. The penny is dropping!
Again, just echoing everyone elses opinions, but I think Modric will leave. I think he made his mind up at the end of last season and was forced to stay for one more season, but I think you may have to let him go. If we (we being Chelsea) are still interested, you will probably get atleast 25-35 million for him so thats a decent sum for Harry to use on a replacement for him. Bale i think will stay, he is a little more loyal to the club and I think he will stick around for atleast another season to see if Spurs can improve and get into the CL. If you fail to qualify next season though I think he may find a big money move to City or Utd a little too tempting.
If, and that's a big IF we're going to sell him to a rival club, it won't be for 25-35mill. we've already rejected £40 from you. he's still got years on his contract. if he's going to another prem club, that club will be paying a fortune for him. Levy will make sure of that. but yes, he could go abroad for 25-35 mill.
You are probably right. And I dont want to sound like I am dissing your player, but he isnt worth 40 million to be honest, his performances this last season werent really awesome. We could get a better midfielder from abroad for 40 million (half a Ronaldo )
Modric will go. Levy probably only kept him based on saying 'stay one more season' hoping Spurs getting at least 4th & CL which will make him want to stay. We got 4th but no CL so I can't see him staying. Add to that Chelsea, where he wanted to go, are in CL now. Modric hasn't had his best season for us too but then it's the first injury free season he has had so might be why it seems that way, not so much he didn't care. He's put a good shift in for someone not wanting to play for us Bale will stay for at least next season but we need to show we are moving forward with the type of players we bring in. No more Saha & Nelson buys. Arsenal lost players even though they get CL every year. This is down to the players wanting to win trophies but they also know this can happen if good players are brought in and a great team is built so can keep them longer if showing intent. Basically RvP will only stay at Arsenal if show they will bring in great players... they won't though and keep buying future stars or one season wonders.
I'd never heard that we doubled the asking price for Bassong before, I thought we kept him because we couldn't get a new centre back in. In fact we were only going to loan Bassong, weren't we?
If anything causes him to go missing in games it's when we pack out own midfield, especially when Bale was convinced he was a central midfielder. That's the reason he tends to have duff games against Man Utd, because Harry is terrified of taking the game to them (unlike any of the other Top 6 teams, who Modric regularly performs against - apart from in games where the whole team is having an utter 'mare), and when he sets up the team to try and nick a point it means Modric's contibution is minimised.
Then Levy may aswell just say he isnt for sale. No one is going to pay 50 million pounds for Modric, 50 million Yen maybe. He is a decent player, but I would value him at 30-35 million tops.
