musty - sorry mate but only about 1 in 5 people in these parts speak Welsh. I respect the right of others to speak it but have no desire to do so myself. My Arabic ain't half bad though.

Welsh is a bit like Arabic in that it can be guttural. They are 'big nipple' languages - difficult to get your tongue around. :)

I went to Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera which of course is a Welsh speaking school like Gwyr. As young ones we just spoke welsh in the class but as we got older we spoke Welsh outside of the class as well. And thanks to Welsh education I think the language is on the rise in Wales again. Which is good as it's part of our identity and culture. Something I'm very proud of so I'm glad to see that you're learning it Musty!!! <cheers>

Union, went to Ystalyfera myself. Did leave there in 1982. Must say my welsh now is terrible, having no one to speak to. I keep saying I should get some books as a refresher.

Neveroffside, that's amazing, we both live around Portsmouth and we both went to the same school. What small bloody world it is! I left in about 2008 I think. Luckily my Family and my girlfriends family speak welsh so I'm often speaking it. There are even two Welsh speakers in work with me here in Pompey. We're everywhere boys!!! <laugh>

the welsh schools locally are full and more are needed to meet demand, its reported the all round teaching/learning quality is higher than the local english juniors/comps maybe in welsh schools more teaching time at the moment is spent on kids mostly from the same ethnic background which must be easier for the teachers. ? Learning welsh and english fluently from an early age gets young brains working that much harder the language is far from in decline the next generations will ensure it thrives a bit better than in recent decades.
