This is exact it. No point replacing with “another” league 1 keeper. If there’s a championship level one available then we should definitely do it. Otherwise, I’m comfortable enough
I mentioned the other day Kieran Westwood being available on a free. He would be outrageous at this level, even at 36. Quality keeper. I’d accept Burge losing his place for a signing of that calibro, otherwise I stand by him being one of the best at the level.
I mean he’s 36, was released quite late, and if he’s looking for a Championship club there’s very few looking. He was still excellent last season, despite their relegation.
Don't have much confidence in him, I don't think he has in himself to be honest. He has improved his catching from crosses but will cost us a few games this season. He might be difference finishing 3rd as opposed to top 2 im afraid.
As a matter of course we should always be looking at potential upgrades and if we could get a Championship ready GK through the door then great but if not I would be happy for him to stay.
When in League One normally you have to take what's available....stay for now till hopefully we move up.
I've said quite a few times that Burge doesn't fill me with confidence. I agree with the people when the say that he's always got a mistake in him. However until about 11 games to go he was one of the league 1 in form keepers, and I do believe had we not picked up all the injuries we did and had a more settled defence I think we would have been promoted. Yes I would prefer another keeper in but if we don't I'm not that worried. I do think with the signings we have made then even with Burge we will have enough to get promoted
Not a lot better L1 keepers so unless a chance to sign an upper championship keeper no benefit in changing. As said before all keepers make mistakes the differences between good and bad is both the frequency of mistakes and the impact of them on the rest of his performance. His frequency does not seem greater than other L1 keepers and when he does make a mistake it doesn't affect the rest of his game.
Released by Coventry for not being good enough. If he is one of the best at this level, that must have been a major slip up by them?
He was offered a new deal by Coventry. He told them he wanted to leave. He stated that when he signed that he wanted to come here for the clubs status and facilities. We’ve technically ‘released’ Hume but we’ve offered him a deal.
“But a season of largely indifferent form in the first campaign back in League One appears to have clouded some supporters’ view of the keeper who left on a free transfer to Sunderland, deemed surplus to requirement by Robins who wanted to go down a different route with ball playing keepers who are more suited to the style of playing out from the back” Are you just making things up as you go along mate?
Not at all. He was offered a contract earlier in the season. Think he was ****e second half of season though.
Right, so he was released because they didn’t want him. Was you at our home defeat to Coventry 5-4 ? If so you would have seen us equalise via a burge howler whilst in Coventry colours... “Sunderland were all over the place at that stage, yet they gained a foothold when Burge made a mess of trying to punch a cross from Bryan Oviedo, enabling Charlie Wyke to roll into an empty net” One of the best mate
