Sam Axe is right Politicians have gotten away with a divide and conquer policy which has targeted specific groups like smokers, drinkers, "junk food" eaters, motorists and Eurosceptics while appeasing other groups A 6p income tax rise would alienate pretty much everyone (other than the rich tax dodgers that we are expected to believe the cut from 50p to 45p will inspire them to mend their ways)
Drinkers and motorists is pretty much everyone, but they get away with it by claiming it's for health and environmental reasons. What it is genuinely doing is taxing the poorer - as low and middle income individuals spend a far greater proportion of their income on alcohol and transport (sometimes together). In terms of the 50p tax I agreed with getting rid of it and 45p is still ridiculous. What incentive is there to work hard in the UK just to have all your effort taxed? Very few wealthy people spend their days lying around wading in their cash feeling very pleased with themselves. The few people I know who have managed to become very well off are always looking to reinvest their cash in other ventures - so if the government wants to take that extra investment cash off them the only choice is to take less risks with their remaining cash or move somewhere more business friendly.
