It appears that Sky have thrown their toys out of the pram and are refusing to share their sports channels with BT even though they provide them for talktalk on a similar basis. Could it be that at last Sky have a serious challenger to their monopoly? Is that what the're frightened of? Sky provide great sports coverage of that there is no doubt but their subscription charges (extra £10 for HD what's all that about?) are extortionate.
As a BT Broadband customer I've signed up for free BT SportHD next season as it seems a great deal, what their overall coverage and analysis turns out to be like remains to be seen. I have no intention of adding Sky Sports to my package anyway but BT are, so I'm led to believe, taking Sky to court over their decision. Sky are even refusing to advertise BT's new service on their channels.
My take on this is that competition can only be good for the consumer, Sky pay a hell of a lot of money for EPL football but still make huge profits year on year from their subscribers. If BT's arrival on the scene means lower subscription charges all the better IMO.
It also appears that the Premier League have asked ISP's to block Firstrow Sports and other free streaming services from next year and it looks like that is going to happen. I suppose the fact that BT have now also shed out wads of cash for EPL football will mean they won't challenge that decision either.
Anyone else got any thoughts here ?
