Interesting stuff Surlyc, but also interesting that the Ruiz rumour now seems to have gone very quiet. Does this mean it really was just a rumour or does it mean negotiations are being finalised behind closed doors in typical Fulham fashion?

I know this surly, but has he been fielded in the Europa League? He has in the Champions League, but has he in the Europa?

If I read what Surly posted correctly, the fact he hasn't played in the Europa league doesn't matter. He's played in Europe, and Twente have qualified for the Europa League. Unless Surly has mistakenly misquoted or got the regs out of context, it looks to me like he's cup-tied for the Europa. Of course, it's entirely possible that I've got this all wrong!

    No he hasn't Bidley.

But the rules state you cannot play in a UEFA club competition for more than one club in the same season. It makes a point not to specify one competition, but any UEFA club competition. You are not eligible to play in the Europa League if you have played for a club which qualified for the group stage of either the UEFA Champions League or the UEFA Europa League, unless you fall under the specific exemption granted in regulation 18.19. Ruiz does not meet the requirements for this exemption, as his current club now play in the Europa League (whether they have played yet or not).

EDIT: The exemption would still not apply at the subsequent registration point (i.e. the knock out rounds) if we qualified for the knock out rounds and Twente did not, as another specific part of the regulations would then apply which prevents a player playing for a new club in the Europa League if his club has played in the competition at any point, regardless of whether the player played in those games.

Gotcha surly, I think I was reading "UEFA club competition" as UEFA Champions League (cut me some slack, I've been at work since 6am!).

lol so have i bidley, not good..

surely this may impact on Ruiz decision on if hes gonna come to us or not, as i know if it was me i would rather play in europa league regardless of how much money i have been offered to play for another club, (hope he doents have my mindset)

Slack cut, Bidley. I've been here since 8 and that's bad enough!

Craven112, under that logic wouldn't Ruiz stay at Twente anyway as they are likely to be in the Champions League next year? I imagine he'd be due a big pay rise to come here, plus the added sponsorship back home if he's playing in the biggest league (commercially) in the world.

so it looks like newcastle have matched the offer for Ruiz. i hope Jol makes him realise that we are the team for him, and newcastle owners are a joke,

I'd say the fee is agreed and necessary paperwork is in but still negotiating on contract. Complete speculation but I'd say he wants more than 50k which, I think, is our wage cap.

    Job done Mr Jol!
I'd have been really p'd off if the Geordies had got him, not helped by rumours about Bobby Z - In the end, we have both!

Seems like a good buy. I thought Spurs were after him, but you guys have done well to pull the rabbit out of the hat. <ok>

i watched a bit of him in the europa league and champions league in the past year or two. i think he might struggle in the premiership if i'm honest. there are alot of poor teams in the eredivisie, so 24 goals in 34 or so matches is not the same as scoring that in a top european league.

from what i remember i dont think he's an out and out striker though.

    Good luck to you lot!

I really like Fulham for some reason - not a team who get bad press is probably why

I also love Aaron Hughes - Mr Underrated

You impressed me when you played us despite your defeat. You know how to pass a ball and just missed that goalscorer at the end of it

Definetly think Ruiz is the man to get you the goals and you have one hell of a manager by the way!

    Good luck :)

Yep, that's what everyone says when somebody signs from the dutch league. Let's judge him when he plays in the PL.

Thanks for the kind words mate. I've always felt for the Toon Army - you deserve better than Ashley.

Yes, true. Didn't Suarez come from the Dutch League - and Van Persie, Bergkamp, Van der Saar. Kuyt, Staam, Van Basten, Guillett, Rykard, Overmars, Davids, Cruyff, etc at some stage also played in it.

    Crap quality league obviously.

That is a compelling argument from Swamp to be fair, Fulhaman. I mean 24 in 34 quite obviously means nothing if a lot of the teams are poor. I mean, look at Suarez, like you said.

Interesting how the media are split on our signings. Some say that Ruiz is the scoop of the window, some (which Swamp must read) say we've had a poor window making obscure foreign signings.

I think we all agree that Jol knows what he's doing and knows Ruiz well and if he thinks Ruiz is the right player for us then I'm not going to argue. Can't wait to see him play and if he turns out to be as good as Suarez then we won't hear the doubters eat their words as we'll be too busy cheering.
