Of course if asked Whelan would tell the press that he wants to bring in a manager like Steve Bruce. If Steve Bruce wants to go I would wish him the best of luck. He did a great job. The fact however remains that he wanted to get back into the PL and whatever Wigan offer it isn't PL.
This would indicate that Whelan is going to appoint a manager who is out of work. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/22761798 Important bit is towards the bottom. After agreeing terms for his manager's release, Whelan's attention now switches to searching through the "30 people" that have applied to be Martinez's successor. "I have not been able to interview any of the 30 people that have applied," Whelan said. "I did not want to jeopardise negotiations about compensation [for Martinez] and it would not have been fair to offer anyone the job when I was not in the clear. "I would say that in football there are always good managers without a position. We have had some very good people apply for the job. "There is no need for me to chase anyone. There are half a dozen top lads among those that have applied."
Other than Eddie Howe, Ole Gunner Solskjaer and possibly Phil Neville, the list isn't overly encouraging. Wouldn't go near Coyle or Poyet myself.
Spot on Ricardo, sky bet has him at 20/1 and betfred 12/1, bit of a difference anyway I've had a fiver
Yesterday we were being told in the North West region, that Mr Whelan had not even started interviewing or approaching the candidates WHO HAD APPLIED for the job - he would have to approach the Allam's first for permission to talk to Steve, and I honestly can't see Papa saying "Of course Mr Whelan, you have my permission". It is a non-story just to fill some column inches in a paper, and also what Mr whelan needs to remember is that the compensation we would be demanding would be higher than the compensation they got from Everton - as our manager is PL not was PL as in the case of the Wigan manager.
Cant see it happening, there,s more chance of Alex Bruce ending up as Wigan manager, then Steve Bruce jumping ship......
HDMsport ‏@HDMsport 31s #hcafc vice-chairman Ehab Allam has told us the club has had no approach from any club for manager Steve Bruce I reckon Dave Whelan has been on the dog to Brucie to test the temperature of the water and he's told him not interested.
HDMsport ‏@HDMsport Steve Bruce has also assured #hcafc that he has had no direct approach from Wigan or other clubs for his services.
No direct approach, does that mean they might contact his agent or a 3rd party is that not counted as a direct approach
Reading this thread I wasn't worried at all until I saw those tweets. Reminds me of Pearson being 'irritated' by the links to Leicester...
HULL CITY have denied national reports suggesting Wigan Athletic have made an approach for manager Steve Bruce. Reports today said Wigan owner Dave Whelan had made an approach to the Tigers for his former manager over a possible return to the club. However, Tigers vice-chairman Ehab Allam has told the Mail no such approach has been made, from Wigan or any other club, for Bruce's services. Allam said City had also spoken to Bruce this morning, who is returning for a family holiday, and he confirmed he had not been approached directly. Bruce had emerged as an unlikely candidate to take over the manager’s job at relegated Wigan after Roberto Martinez's departure for Everton. Wigan owner Dave Whelan is an admirer of Bruce, who managed the club before leaving to take over at Sunderland four years ago, and the two are said to have a good relationship. Bruce led Wigan to their best finish of 11th in the Premier League five years ago. But if Wigan did make their an approach it is doubtful whether he would relish a return to the Championship to try to take relegated Wigan back to the Premier League. Bruce has already spoken of his frustration about being forced to leave the Premier League under a cloud with Sunderland prior to taking on the job with the Tigers. It would also be a significant step down for Bruce after taking City back to the Premier League on the final day of the season. Bruce has also developed a close relationship with City owner Assem Allam, who has shown him significant backing since he took over from Nigel Pearson last summer. He has repeatedly spoken about his desire to make the Tigers a success to reward Allam for the huge financial commitment he made to saving the Tigers from the brink of administration in December 2010. Today the bookies installed Bruce as a 10/1 shot to take over at the Latics behind favourites including former England manager Steve McLaren, MK Dons boss Karl Robinson, Wigan assistant manager Graeme Jones and Sir Alex Ferguson’s former number two at Manchester United, Mike Phelan. Whelan is also reported to be looking at Brighton’s suspended boss Gus Poyet, former Bolton manager Owen Coyle and Manchester United’s coach Rene Meulensteen. Hull Daily Mail Report
BBC Sportsday live http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/22778296 " 1038: FOOTBALL With Roberto Martinez expected to be confirmed as Everton manager imminently, Wigan are pressing ahead with their search for his replacement, reports BBC Sport's Ben Smith. It is understood the club have received more than 30 expressions of interest in the position but are working their way down to a shortlist in the hope of making an appointment by the end of next week. One name that has been heavily linked with a return to Wigan is that of Hull manager Steve Bruce but it is understood that chairman Dave Whelan has had no contact with the former Manchester United captain at this stage and has no plans to."
I don't see it happening, what would attract him to leave us and go to Wigan. If they shed a few players that could a right task getting them back up
Just a case of the Daily Mail suggesting the Bruce is at the top of Whelan's wanted list, and other papers just latching on to the story. Not fact based at all.
