Unless you had a time machine then which allowed you to travel forward in time to the present day, then "at that time" the Heavyweight Division was at it's lowest ebb ever. It may be worse now but now is not then.
Good point, well made, regarding the time travelling malarky, but while it might not have been as good as when Ali, Liston and Frasier were about, he did still beat Spinks and Holmes(admittedly past his best), so to say he didn't beat anybody of note is nonsense!
spinks was undefeated and tyson ko'd him in 90 seconds. the berbick fight was unreal. totally destroyed the guy.
larry holmes' finest moment ****in brilliant
Spinks and Holmes? Spinks was average at best Holmes had the potential to be great but never delivered and he was well past his best when Tyson beat him. Tyson could'nt even beat Holyfield who was a blown up Light heavy. Look at the list of duds Tyson beat compared to who Ali beat and it's not even a debate. Tim Wotherspoon, Buster Douglas are among the legends he beat.
What a magic thread this is. Can't believe I missed it. Every single person on here has also missed the point that before he created jeet kune do, Bruce Lee was a master in wing chun (the martial art from which Lee derived his famous style) Wing chun is specifically designed to use a larger and stronger opponents weight and bulk to your advantage, it's a intuitive style that can only be mastered by practice. Watch the video, explains it a lot better than I can.
To dismiss Tyson as an average heavyweight is just foolish. He had phenomenally quick handspeed and was concussive with either hand. His head movement and peek-a-boo style defence rarely saw him get cleanly caught. He cut off the ring very well and always relentlessly pressured his opponent. Sure, he get fed some bums to bump up his profile at the start (which boxer doesn't) and he spat them out within minutes. However, when he moved up through the levels, he wasn't found out and indeed improved vastly by cutting out the wasteful haymakers he kept trying to land, he became more disciplined. Tony Tucker was a dangerous opponent and Tyson put on great display to take his title. Ok, Holmes was on his way down, but he'd never been put on his arse until he fought Tyson. Tyrell Biggs was an Olympic Gold medalist and considered a cut above Tyson but he got put away in the 7th IIRC. I'll give you Michael Spinks as being a pish opponent, he was beaten before the bell rang ffs. However, Tyson beat a very dangerous Razor Ruddock, twice, once by K.O and once on points. If he hadn't got mixed up with that clown, King, then he could've reigned over the Heavyweight Division for years and years. Unfortunately he self-destructed and deprived us of some cracking bouts. The results of his match-ups post-prison ruin his statistics, as had he fought Holyfield and Lewis while still in his prime, I think he would've sparked them both out for the reason above, his head movement was superb and the power in either fist was lethal. He would've slipped jabs and got inside to deliver the uppercut. I think Bruce Lee would've ****ed him up though by way of a Chinese Burn
Those fights were quality. I'm going to go look them up and watch them again Have to admit that Tyson is my favourite heavyweight of all time. The guy was nothing short of a machine in those days.
makes me laugh how people say oh bruce lee would kill him easy. show me 1 fight of his on youtube to back this up? have any of you ever seen him fighting? no.
Nev Everyone is of the opinion that Lee would bitchslap Tyson, read the thread again. Tyson was average at best
what was lee at best then? how many belts has he won? the **** died at 30. he's nothin but a kung fu actor
