He is quoted as saying "There is only so much you can achieve with clubs like,Hull,Wigan or Birmingham", and i'm sorry but i have to agree with that. I don't have a problem with him dreaming of a "big club", i just think the timing is awful. And surely he should know that if a top six club fancied him, they would come knocking at his door anyway. Man utd would know that if they wanted him,he would come ? Will he be applying for any top vacancies that may arise ? Having read these quotes, probably.... Disappointed.
It will never happen. Think back to 18 months ago and posters on here were saying Steve Bruce is not good enough for Hull City. I remember when Brian Horton took over Manchester City. I did a lot of business in Manchester in those days with avid Manchester City fans. I told them Horton managed Hull City to our highest ever finish in the old division 2 and he is/was a top manager (Championship today, for the benefit of younger readers) and they laughed at me. They thought he was beneath them and that attitude remained until the day they sacked him. The same attitude exists today amongst the top six clubs. Because Steve Bruce has worked miracles at Hull City means zilch to them because we are so far beneath them in their expectations it just does not register. Speak to any Sunderland fan today and they would say exactly the same. So can put an end to this unnecessary speculation once and for all? Just think back to our first time in the Premiership and everyone was tipping Phil Brown to be the next Sunderland manager, the HDM were almost calling for it, then he moved up a few notches to being tipped for the England job. When we started losing and he eventually was sacked he was lucky to get a start with Preston NE.
I said at the time SB signed Alex it was a clever move by the Allams to allow him to. Brucey has/had a rep as unreliable and always moving on. By letting him sign his lad it makes it more likely to keep him here too. Alex has got another year, next step is getting him onto the coaching team and start building a dynasty.
Yeh let them all think that. Let them think they are extra special, 'big' and that Hull City are small, nothing. All of us do the same thing, send 11 players to kick about a ball on a football field. But let them think they do something different, or are more important. History is ultimately less important than what you doing right now. Some teams are doing better than us at present, fair enough. Norwich aren't. Leeds aren't. Etc.
Over the years, Steve Bruce has spent a lot of money at various clubs and never really succeeded and pissed off a lot of chairmen in the process. In the last 2 years while here, he managed to drag us over the line last season when lets be honest here, we was playing **** at times and this season we are looking like we are going to survive. Yes, Steve is doing a great job here and long may it continue but thoughts of him getting even a top 10 job in the premier league are well wide off the mark because he isn't proven yet.
we are a tiny club, at the moment. If we win the FA cup? getting bigger. imagine if we won the Charity Shield next season too? the top 6 will start to sit up and take notice. mind you to be perfectly honest, I dont want one of the top six poaching him.
The last thing we need is AA's madness forcing out another good manager. I though he'd learnt his lesson after NP left. Bruce has done a superb job of managing upwards this season especially when he has been hung out to dry by the Allams and their myopic concerns.
Perception should be less important than 1) money - if someone can pay him more. 2) someone has more chance of doing better and having more success. Someone just thinking they are 'bigger' should never be relevant, it's a pretty shallow way that some unsuccessful clubs might cling onto the past to make them think they are better than they are.
Yes, I'm sure if Bournemouth replace Norwich n the PL all the players PL Bournemouth approach will wait to see if Championship Norwich want them before signing for them.
