I remember there being a vote of some sort that proved the Greeks wanted to stay in. Was either a referendum or a general election, can't remember.

Anyone can leave the EU. We're the only country with enough low-IQ ****s/lazy Remainers/megacunts in power to actually make it happen.

 

After the Syriza government was elected on a mandate of renegotiating Greece’s debt, they approached their creditors with a plan to do exactly that. All the creditors, at the instigation of French and German banks that held most of the debt, said “no dice”.


Expecting this response, Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis has drawn up alternative plans to effectively declare Greece bankrupt - which, effectively, they were anyway. In which case creditors would be paid a fraction of the outstanding balance owed, in proportion to be determined by the IMF.

The response from the ECB was that if you do that, you’re on your own. Out of the Euro, and forced to reissue the Drachma, which would probably have become worthless as soon as it was issued - echoes of the Weimar Republic and all that.

Varoufakis had a plan for dealing with exactly that worse case scenario; he had designed complex financial mechanisms which involved issuing government bonds to back a voucher system, which would have provided food, rent, and basic necessities for all Greek citizens. He has also opened negotiations with the Chinese government to invest in Greek rail and port infrastructure projects.

Varoufakis urged President Alexis Tsipras to at least stand his ground and call the ECBs bluff, but Tsipras caved under pressure, swallowed the medicine which the ECB and IMF prescribed on behalf of the German and French Banks, and the rest is history.

That’s a very basic summary, I can give you more detail if you like. Not from clicking your hastily googled links to bullshit sources; I know a bit about the Greek debt crisis because I read reputable sources, including Varoufakis’ book “Adults in the Room”. Which I’d recommend to you, but I doubt you read books.
