Russians probably know a different version of history to the version recorded outside Russia. The Russian army has a long history of just flattening towns and cities that do not surrender. It pretty much started in 1917. They did quite a lot of it in WWII – anybody that can remember that in Russia was probably a child at the time.

What we see in the news media is undoubtedly coloured by propaganda on both sides. We have already seen old footage of injured people being used by the Ukrainian side and their claims to have killed 9,000 Russians are backed up by no credible or verifiable evidence. Russian state media will only be giving the Putin version of events and they have tried to ban outside media, which usually backfires.

The most credible reporting is coming from foreign journalists on the ground but they are only on the defenders’ side, whilst the satellite footage is all very good but are we only being shown what they want us to see?

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain will be able to move more quickly to sanction Russian businessmen over President Vladimir Putin's decision to invade Ukraine as a result of new legal measures which will be sent to parliament next week, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said.

Asked by foreign correspondents in London why Roman Abramovich, the highest-profile Russian businessman in Britain due to his ownership of Chelsea Football Club, had not been sanctioned, Johnson said the government had to move carefully.

"None of us want to live in a country where the state can take your house off you without a very high burden of proof and due process," he was quoted as saying in the interview conducted on Friday by Italy's La Repubblica and other newspapers.

"There's no point saying, yeah, we're going to go after him, and then you come up against the brick wall of lawyers. So we have to get it right. We're also trying not to just make this about one individual," Johnson added.
