Will this 54 year old be replacing Emmanuel Macron as the first actual woman French President?

The French equivalent of the British Conservatives, Les Républicains, elected Valerie Pécresse as their Presidential candidate for 2022, their first ever female contender. The head of the Île-de-France regional council saw off Xavier Bertrand and our favourite Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier in the first round and polled 61 per cent of the votes to see off right winger Éric Ciotti in the second. She has previously been a minister in the Sarkozy administration.

So three of the main parties are now represented by women: Marine Le Pen still leads the National Rally whilst the Socialists selected the failing Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, as their candidate.

The French Left are in disarray. Hidalgo is only polling at around 5 per cent and the Green candidate Yannick Jadot is at 7.6 per cent, behind far Left candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon on 9 per cent. Les Républicains have some work to do as the polls currently have Macron and Le Pen making it to the run off. One of the principle policies being put forward by Pécresse is to cut 200,000 public sector jobs to raise the pay of the remainder. Almost a British Conservative policy in a country where the militant unions dictate to the government by taking to the streets.

I can tell you exactly what will happen. Macron and Le Pen will run off in the final. Macron will win.
