Vauxhall owner Stellantis has announced plans to build electric vans at its Ellesmere Port plant in Cheshire.

The £100m investment will safeguard more than 1,000 factory jobs.

The Ellesmere Port plant will also make electric passenger car models for Vauxhall, Opel, Peugeot and Citroën.

The £100m is the total amount of investment, and includes the UK government support.

Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng declined to comment on a Telegraph report that the level of government support was £40m, citing commercial sensitivity.

A 40% subsidy by HMG? I would imagine that you could get any amount of commerce set up for that kind of tut. Well we can't accuse them of being Thatcherite. She allowed BL to go down the tubes for the sake of the kind of cash you find down the back of the G Plan. Would have made far more sense to have kept our own industry and reverse engineered other people's cars.

 

It's funny how little fuss some posters made about the huge amounts of tax money the EU used to entice businesses to the mainland from here, or how we've been subsidising the countries by paying the migrant workers a low wage, which they took back to their homeland, while we paid out for our unemployed, because they stuck out for a realistic wage.

 

I'm still devastated that the kiddies tennis outfit business relocated to Romania because we don't have enough Romanian workers here .
