Woman kicked out of Sturgeon trans debate for wearing suffragette scarf



A woman was kicked out of a Holyrood debate about transgender rights because her scarf in suffragette colours was deemed unacceptable by parliament staff.

The woman said she had eventually been told by parliament staff that her scarf had been deemed unacceptable because it was “associated with a political movement”.

However, two of the MSPs on the committee, and other parliament staffers, attended the hearing wearing rainbow lanyards, which have been adopted by trans rights activists. They were not asked to leave.

Russell Findlay, the Scottish Tory MSP, demanded an explanation of the decision at the session. However, he was cut off by Joe FitzPatrick, the committee convener .

Other women attending the hearing were warned that they would not be readmitted if they were wearing green, white and purple tartan scarves when they returned after a break

Parliament rules state that display of “banners or slogans” are banned but they make no mention of colours.

Joanna Cherry, the gender critical SNP MP, claimed that the removal of the woman could be unlawful.

“It seems no rule has been broken so this woman should be readmitted or the [Scottish Parliament] could face a claim of discrimination on the grounds of belief, particularly where MSPs are permitted to wear rainbow colours,” she tweeted. “This is not my Scotland.”

Mr Findlay said: “It’s shocking that the Scottish Parliament thinks it’s acceptable to police a woman’s clothing in this manner with the order to remove a scarf in the colours of the suffragettes.

“To do so during the discussion of a Bill that would limit the rights of women and girls makes it even worse.

“The Parliament fashion police need to think again. To call suffragette colours 'political' is a complete overreach and troubling attempt to control people’s lives."
