Monday was ‘Labor Day’ in the United States and Canada, so the stock markets were closed. When the markets opened on Tuesday morning, the world’s biggest company by market capitalisation, Nvidia, lost $279bn in value. There are only 29 companies on the US stock market that have a total value more than that. It was the biggest single day loss ever by any listed company. Some of it will be down to Nvidia’s results reported at the end of last week not blowing the forecasts out of the water. Another part of it will be Friday’s bad job numbers from the US government – in a couple of weeks there had been an expectation of an interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve. There now has to be a question mark against that and Sleepy Joe’s fiscal stimulus may be coming back to haunt Americans. In a recent survey, Gallup asked Americans where they should invest their money. Only 7% of Democrats said gold while 27% of Republicans nominated the shiny metal. Republicans buy gold as a safe haven from the problems that result from Democrat ‘problem solving’. With Labour’s latest attempts at ‘problem solving’ already unravelling around us, perhaps sensible people should put their money in the shiny metal as the loonies cannot print and spend more of it to make it worthless like they can sterling. If the country has any left, Reeves will probably tell the market that she is going to sell it so that she gets the worst possible price.
