Obviously we are relatively reliant on our financial sector and more at risk in global crashes. That’s the trade-off for making **** all when we used to make a lot. We have competitive advantages which suit the UK to that sector. Brown handled the global crisis well by all accounts except yours. The trade-off for austerity should have been reduced debt. A flattish line from 2010 isn’t some great success for Tory economics.

Brown did pretty much all he could do in 2008 and bail out the banks – effectively nationalising them so that most of the losses have been realised in the 15 years since. Had he split the banks up into their investment banking and consumer banking divisions (as had been advised) then he could have just let the investment banks go bust, as happened in the US with the likes of Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns and Washington Mutual Bank. Who said that flatlining debt was a success? You were the one originally claiming that the Tories had increased debt horrendously over the last 13 years, a statement that is factually inaccurate. The debt has only increased ‘horrendously’ since Boris and Rishi went mad with the Magic Money Tree during the plague – up 15 percentage points in three years.
