When I turned up in Guernsey 5 years ago the company I was working for put me up in a lovely big house shared with 3 other people, with a swimming pool, a pool table and 50 inch tellies hanging off the walls. A very reasonable fixed amount of money was deducted from my pay packet every month and all bills were included. I can remember a few weeks in one of the light bulbs went out - I said to the one of the other tenants in the house that we needed a new light bulb, his response was "don't worry, I'll just phone the company and they will come around and fix it". I can remember being mortally offended, "no I won't phone someone in, I'll change my own ****ing light bulb" how utterly emasculating - I'd be living on my own for 6 years with nobody but myself to answer to, how irritating I found a scenario where the company looked after your home needs. When I tried to articulate this frustration to other people they didn't understand; "this is ****ing great, you've no responsibilities, everything is done for you, what are you complaining about?" The complaint was working for a company which mothered you, both in the office and outside of it. It was like living in a work camp - and despite being paid lots of money and having top of the range living conditions I hated it. So no, being independent is not about greed with me, it's about self respect - I'd rather live in a ****y flat where I change my own light bulb than in a mansion as a serf. And going by the response of some of my friends over my protestations it seems to be a bit of an innate characteristic, since so many other people loved the same scenario I hated.
