As stated rehabilitating people is the key. I know of a good project at acklington prison in Northumberland which is now doing good work as example. Hopefully there is more resources put into this and the government getting Timson involved is a good start.

Sadly a lot of these services were lost under Tory austerity measures after the 2010 election. An absolute false economy given where crime is today.

Di you think government should tackle crime by telling parents to sort their kids out?

Yes should be one of the answer, look at how many children have to be taught how to use the toilet at school. Three murder trials in Middlesbrough area yesterday of children killed by parents, should some people be stopped from having children, they would be banned from owning pets for less.

Terrible that news in Boro. Some are banned from having children though. Clearly one of the answers is parents, what are the others? Youth services and Surestart? Violence reduction teams?

Or no services = kids have nothing to do and ASB and crime go up and we all pay more in the long run as kids have lower expectations and all of our quality of life suffers.

This has always been my mantra. I have done a lot of this sort of volunteering over the years. It works in my experience too.

I would advocate volunteering for more adults. It is so rewarding. I had hope for the big society idea. Poorly implemented by the tories, but a good concept. I often wonder if a sort of volunteering national service time period for volunteering wouldnt make a huge difference on so many levels. Sadly, my experience of encoutaging folk to do a little bit is like talking to a brick wall. We need to break the entitled mentality in modern society and get a bit of help ourselves back.

It’s that simple. Invest to save. Invest nothing fund high cost emergencies. No on moans about preventative fire safety do they ? (Unless it bleeps during the night cos the battery needs replacing)

Definitely this. A lot do volunteer. I get told I work too many hours but I tell them the spare is volunteering. I even know people who fund projects out of their personal wage for the good of others while some parents drop kids and run. Everybody brings something. It makes you well helping others and builds community relationships in the best way possible. Stops you being lonely. I liked the concept of the big society but it was sadly a cover for austerity - the issue being someone still has to pay for the hire of the pitch, hall, bus hire , training course etc or whatever and somebody somewhere charges. Some parents struggle with fees every week if they have a few kids and are on hard times. So it needs the core costs covering then the perfect thing is to fill the staff gaps with the local community. My worst issue with the Blair era and the food that was done in communities was the phrase ‘ you said we did’ - meaning services did it after consultation. The ‘we’ should be services and the community together or it builds dependence.

Let's face it we have been let down over some major incidents that should never have happened. Manchester bombing was on radar yet allowed to walk into an event with a backpack and not stopped. A dance class for children should have been one of the most normal days ever. However no matter how much intelligence is in place you cannot stop unpredictable behaviour.

Sad times mate. I was working around Manchester at the time of that. Not only but partly with migrant communities. I knew and worked with a bloke whose kid had something embedded in her knee and ended up meeting a few parents of victims who stayed in touch. Saw the local ethnic minority communities gutted but scared. There have been some awful things go on.

It just didn't make sense, someone that was on the radar had terrorist links was able to walk in to an event so easily.

Like you said though. There are a lot of troubled people around. A lot to follow. A lot of demands on services. Tragic consequences for the ones that slip through. Imagine if you could buy guns in Asda.
