You do remember that Smith and Pack from that promotion midfield played together for another 2-3 years in the Championship...

Of course I do and if that's what you call consistent then fine.

Back then if City hadn't taken the lead just before half time, Pack and Smith (neither of whom could be called 'organisers') would constantly be caught out ahead of the ball, with 2 wing backs in support, when a move of ours broke down, leaving us susceptible to a long ball and 3/4 breaking midfielders v maybe 2 defenders. The discipline in midfield has been poor in not sticking to their job. They have to communicate so at least one is occupying a more defensive role. It something along with now lack of steel in midfield that IMHO has been our downfall.

Pack and Smith are fine midfielders, no argument about that, but neither were organisers, both did their pointing and shouting and directing when ball was dead, some players cannot combine organising and playing. That is why they are in demand.

I'm confused, you say we haven't had a good consistent midfield since we got promoted, yet these were the two midfielders who were so good in our promotion season, to the point you make, we have not had anybody of that ilk since, yet now you say neither were organisers? I don't understand your argument? I think it's more they were excellent L1 players, and ok to good Championship players, and we haven't found the Championship level equivalents?

You seem to have overlooked in that promotion season the glue that held that midfield together was Wade Elliott, he was an organiser and has never been replaced.

I just looked at the players released from Championship clubs and it's slim pickings tbh, although maybe Andre Ayew on a free after leaving Swansea could be worth a shot? 16 goals last season, double what Fammy got, and 15 the season before, I would take that form over the next season to complement Wood and Wells?

having been just 6ft from a flash of lightening I tend to hope that it is not going to repeat and be even closer! …. I have wracked my brains trying to remember anywhere a team has "bought in 2 or 3 players from a managers ex team [ over 25 yo ] " that have excelled. 29 is not that bad an age but 31/2 is a bit of a hoped for, short term fix? We are supposed to building! A reasonable player at 30 years old in this day and age does have a chance to make it another 3-5 years of close to the standard they play /played at in their previous 2 or 3 years!

Is that the same Andre Ayew on £80k a week at Swansea? I can only assume with him being released he didn’t accept a lower wage.

I had no idea he was on that wage, so yes, you are probably right that it's why he was let go. At £80k a week, he should be in the 20_ goals per season region to represent any ROI on him, but players and their agents don't see it that way, and worse still clubs don't either....
He won't get even half of that anywhere now, in fact I doubt he could get above £30k in the current market, even on a free transfer.

plenty of reports but no real action and time is moving on .. a couple weeks of squad commaderie would have been nice before the hectic friendly fortnight!. I am guessing players in the euro's don't help the domino effect from the top!

about 3 weeks to first friendly and no incoming...
NAGY and KALAS doing well [ so is our giveaway Joe Morrel! ]...any other ex city players playing?
having 2 -3 weeks to settle in and showing what they can do is important …. likely any players we bring in will need to be brought up to fitness. Unfit players must be suspect for potential injuries? in the past we do seem to have a lost a few of the new intake to early … long term injury!
come Friday/ Saturday lets hope the whisper of 2 through the door are fruitful "rumours"
