Probably right with Cornick, Naismith was their player of the season though so unlikely with him

Carlton Palmer reacts as Bristol City look set to sign Fulham star

Carlton Palmer tells FLW his verdict on Bristol City's pursuit of Joe Bryan

    upload_2023-5-18_12-49-50.png

Joe Bryan is close to making a return to Bristol City, according to The Athletic.

The 29-year-old is set to become a free agent following the conclusion of his Fulham contract at the end of this season.

Bryan has fallen down the pecking order at Craven Cottage having spent the campaign out on loan with French side Nice, where he has made just nine appearances in all competitions.

The defender has become a reported transfer target for a number of clubs, but it is looking increasingly likely that the Robins have won the race to his signature.

Would Joe Bryan be a good signing for Bristol City?
Carlton Palmer believes that Bryan would be a fantastic addition to Nigel Pearson’s squad for next season.

Bryan played for City from 2011 to 2018, making over 200 appearances for the club, which the 57-year-old believes has helped in the race to sign the full back.

The former midfielder has claimed that Bryan still has plenty to offer even if his time at Fulham has gone off the boil since promotion to the Premier League was earned last year.

“Joe Bryan would be a fantastic signing for Bristol City, on a free transfer from Fulham,” Palmer told Football League World.

“He’s fallen down the pecking order at Fulham, having achieved promotion there and being a key part of promotion with Fulham.

“He’s a former Bristol City player and he’s probably seen the very good work that Nigel Pearson is doing and he’s taking the club forward.

“I think the fact that he’s also played for Bristol City before has probably given Nigel a head against competition from several other Championship clubs.

“And at 29-years of age, he’s still got plenty to offer so this is great in the rebuilding job that Nigel is doing at Bristol City.”

How big of an impact can Joe Bryan have at Bristol City?
Bryan is an experienced defender who now knows what it takes to gain promotion to the Premier League.

His time at Nice may also have been beneficial, even if his game time was limited, as he worked with a high quality, top flight side abroad which should also have given him great experience to bring back to this Championship team.

Bryan also knows the club well from his seven years in the first team squad.

As a free agent signing, this is a real coup for Pearson to start-off City’s summer transfer plans.

I was there, what a game!!!, memories, sure we were 2-0 down and drew 2-2, the game was late starting, the last 10-15 mins was played with both teams not venturing outside their own half as the Sunderland result was known. Both sides stayed up, Sunderland went down. Bizarre!!

    What a night ?
    What a week !
On the Monday night we beat Liverpool 2-1 at AG after being 1 down I think.
3 days later on the Thursday our biggest away following ever at Coventry.
Watched Somerset v W Indies in Bath till tea then straight to Coventry.
Hunter and Yorath orchestrated the last 20 minutes ensuring the draw which kept both sides up.
On the pitch after......... what a night.

    Edit
Just read the article and apparently it was the last 5 minutes they played keep ball.
Seemed a lot longer at the time.

ℹ️ Statement - Football Banning Order
    Friday, May 19th 2023

A man has been banned from attending football matches after racially abusing a player during a match.

Gareth Ralph, from Southville, received a three-year football banning order (FBO) after being found guilty of a racially-aggravated public order offence.

The 68-year-old racially abused an opposition player when Bristol City hosted Huddersfield Town at Ashton Gate on 18 December 2021. The matter was reported by people within the ground who heard what Ralph said.

He was sentenced at Bristol Magistrates' Court on Thursday, May 18th and the banning order will prevent him from attending any UK football match for the duration of the three years. Recipients of FBOs must also adhere to other conditions, including surrendering their passport for the duration of senior international football tournaments.

Ralph was also fined £300, must pay £100 compensation and ordered to pay £201 in costs and victim surcharge.

PC Tom Williams said: "This kind of behaviour has no place within football or wider society. When incidents are reported, they will be thoroughly investigated and we will seek football banning orders for offenders.

"The abuse was not fortunately heard by the player himself, but this case highlights the importance of supporters reporting such incidents to the authorities if they do encounter any form of hate abuse. We are hugely grateful to those who reported this incident to us so we could get justice in this case.

"It’s always preferable for matters to be reported at the time to stewards in the ground or to the police. Alternatively the anonymous phone line advertised by clubs can be used as this allows us to act on the incident immediately and increases the likelihood of us being able to identify those responsible.

"We will continue to work with all football clubs, players, supporters groups, Kick It Out and the Players Football Association to tackle this kind of deplorable and inexcusable behaviour."

Bristol City Football Club condemns the actions of the aforementioned individual and would like to firmly reiterate our zero tolerance policy towards racism or discrimination of any kind.

The Club has fully supported Avon & Somerset Police throughout the process and the decision to issue a football banning order.

If fans see or hear any racist, homophobic or any other abuse around the stadium they should report it to our text line: 07770 736 047.

Why Rangers could regret Ryan Kent exit as Hibs boss Lee Johnson recalls Bristol City loan spell
Ryan Kent looks set to depart Rangers this summer with Fenerbahce looking the likely destination.

The winger is out of contract at the end of the season with reports indicating that a move to the Turkish giants is on the cards. Kent has scored 33 times in 218 games for Rangers but has managed just three this campaign with his ratio for goals and assists often coming under scrutiny.

However, Hibs boss Lee Johnson, who managed the former Liverpool youngster during a loan spell at Bristol City in 2018, reckons Kent will be a big loss for Rangers as he backed the 26-year-old to go on a "hot streak".

"I think he's matured into a fantastic player," Johnson said. “I thought he was brilliant against us. When I took him to Bristol City it wasn't ideal circumstances. We were flying, he had a few groin problems, he wasn't the Ryan Kent that has gone on to have 150 games since. We just couldn't get that consistency in terms of his starts and his games. But as with all my ex-players, I always keep an eye out for them and I'm obviously delighted for him and proud of his performances and moves.

"Whatever he does in the summer, which obviously looks like he's moving away, I think he will do really well. People talk about his numbers and this and that, but he puts teams on the back foot because he's so sharp and he's got that ability to turn, drive at you and go both ways. Any one season he could absolutely have a hot streak and score and assist at will."

I have the similar thoughts as you but some on here still show interest and there is very little to discuss anyway.

I’m mildly curious - same as I’d be mildly interested in an update on Cotts, Delboy or any other ex City manager.
Not enough to go searching around for it though.

I liked Cotts, thought he wasn’t really given the chance in the championship that he’d earned by the amazing season before. Which other than the promotion to Division one was probably the best in our recent history, plus he wore his heart on his sleeve, my type of manager.

I agree - I’ll always love him for that season.
Interesting that NOBODY has ever given him a chance at Championship level except for ourselves and Forest though.

We’ll never know I just think he’d earned a chance. He’d developed a real togetherness in that squad, that we haven’t had again until NP is starting to develop it now. It’s what is needed for a team to be better than the sum of its parts.

This has been debated almost as much as LJ has on here.
My own personal opinion is that he fell out with SL after the Maguire debacle.
We put in bids for Gray, Gayle and Maguire. Gray and Gayle just laughed us off, but the Maguire deal looked to be going through until someone from the back room staff tried to renegotiate the price behind Cotts’ back and the deal collapsed.
Up to this moment, he (Cotts) had my full sympathy and support.
However, once the new season started he behaved like he had lost interest - it was as if he didn’t mind losing. We played a 3-5-2 formation every game without any variation. It wasn’t working but he stuck stubbornly to it regardless. He also would not deploy his subs until the 80th minute when chasing the game. Madness. He may have had a genuine grievance with SL but to ‘sabotage’ my club’s league progress to make a point is unacceptable and it was right that he was sacked.
Forest fans used to call him a ‘one trick pony’ and I’m afraid they appear to have been correct.
I underline my opinion with the fact that Pembo stopped the rot immediately as soon as he took over by switching to 4-4-2 and deploying subs at a logical time.
I know he’s like a god to some people on here for giving us that great season when we romped League 1, but IMHO if we’d stuck with him and his 3-5-2 formation and crazy subs we would have dropped straight back down where we’d only just escaped from.
Like you said; we’ll never know, but the TREND backs up my view and so does Pembo’s immediate turnaround.

Gray was also agreed, and on his way. Can’t remember who but both deals done, to try and renegotiated. Brentford then backed out and when we went back in for him price went up and Burnley swept in.

    I didn’t know this.
I thought that the players themselves didn’t want to come to us.
If you’re right then Cotts would have 2 reasons to be angry and I fully understand and sympathise.
However, that does not excuse him for his failure to deploy his squad correctly to try and win games.
Either he had no idea how to - or he deliberately chose not to by way of protest.
Neither of those possibilities are professional nor acceptable and he had to go.
No matter how pissed off I am with my boss, I always try to do the best work I can. I may be looking frantically for another job behind the scenes but I still do my professional duty.

there is always a few twists in end of season games! The unexpected bound for relegation winning against the top teams! or top teams losing the odd point or 2 against opposition they should have won!
OR in the case of loanee's not being able to compete against their parent club.. Paul Simpson ex Bristol City coach and temporary manager with a player, Ben Barclay on loan from Stockport, not being able to play at Wembley after scoring the goal that got them there!

I often wonder if, as SL said " we were to hasty to have acted!" would have given us a different outcome to where we are now!
There is a lot of euphoria over what NP has " ACHIEVED" .... and he has stabilised the ship to a degree! and as the encumbent has my support to succeed in his 3rd full term.. if he chooses to stay or doesnt get sacked!
    season............ GAMES WON & POINTS
    16/17 .. 15 .. 54
